Hosted by none other than Tiger Woods, the annual Genesis Invitational took place over the weekend at the brilliant Riviera Country Club in San Diego. 26-year-old Jacob Bridgeman claimed his maiden victory having managed to stay just one stroke ahead of Kurt Kitayama and Rory McIlroy come the end of the Sunday.

By the end of Round 3, Bridgeman was sitting pretty on a 6-shot lead on 19-under-par with McIlroy in second place on 13-under, trailed by Aldrich Potgieter on 12-under. Despite starting his final round strong with birdies on holes 1 and 3, Bridgeman was clearly feeling the pressure, and subsequently carded bogeys on holes 4 and 7.

Kitayama then stormed the leaderboard with a phenomenal 7-under round and Rory closed on a couple of birdies for them both to settle on 17-under-par. After a bogey on the 16th, Bridgeman had cut his lead to just one stroke. A managed to make some very nervy pars on 17 and 18 to keep the field at bay and win the tournament.

Understandably, Bridgeman was thrilled with his win, and confirmed the immense pressure of having to close out at the Riviera Country Club. “I couldn’t even feel my hands on the last couple of greens. I thought it was going to be a lot easier than that.” The victory earned Bridgeman $4 million and 700 FedEx Cup points. It also propelled him from being 52nd to 20th in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Rory gave it a good stab, but the Northern Irishman couldn’t quite catch up with the American’s big overnight lead. He admitted that some hesitation on the greens resulted in missing out on rolling in more birdie opportunities:

“I’ll rue basically all 18 holes yesterday and then the front nine today, like 27 holes where I failed to capitalise on the chances I gave myself. Once I started to trust my reads a bit on the back nine and I went more with my first instinct, I putted a little bit better. I was almost just giving them too much thought and not going with my first instinct and that sort of cost me.”
