Shop news

New arrivals keep coming

Look out for some new brands arriving in the shop very soon, we have got some new Glenmuir knitwear and polo shirts on the way, with prices starting at £49.99 for a cashmere blend sweater they offer great quality and value, they will be available in smart presentation boxes so they make the ideal Christmas present - no apologies for mentioning Christmas as it's only nine weekends away now!!

Also due in any time now are some merino wool FootJoy sweaters from their latest Autumn/Winter collection, they have a classic look so they look good when worn both on and off the golf course and the merino wool is such a fine knit that it had good warmth qualities but also feels lighter to wear than lambs wool. Make sure you call into the shop over the next week or two and take a look at our new stock!

Exciting news for next year

Over the next few weeks we will be bringing you exciting news about new brands to look out for in the shop next year, we have just confirmed that we will be stocking the 2016 range of Skechers shoes, Skechers trainers are massive in the US and they have only been in the golf shoe business for the last couple of years but they have already become a major player. The Skechers golf shoes have a sporty modern look, many of them are also spikeless and they are extremely well priced as they are seeking to gain a big foot hold (no pun intended!) in the golf shoe market.

You will see the Skechers shoes on Tour as they are worn by Matt Kuchar amongst others, have a look at their current shoe range by clicking here: http://www.skechersgogolf.co.uk/.

The 2016 shoe range is very impressive from Skechers and we are sure that you will think the same when you seem them in the shop from next February!

Course news

A couple of weeks ago we had a company come in that took aerial footage of every hole on the golf course, if you've ever seen golf coverage on TV they do a similar thing where they show you individual holes from above, our golf course is now available to view on their website - click here to have a look.

I'm sure that you will agree the course looks great from above and it's interesting to get a fresh perspective on each hole, the guys with the drone were particularly impressed by our ninth hole and they dubbed it the 'triple threat hole' due to the three water hazards that come into play.

Competition news

3 club challenge review

One of the highlights of the year for our members is always the 3 club challenge, the format this year was a nine hole Stableford where you were only allowed to use two clubs plus a putter, as usual the scoring was exceptionally good and some people seemed to play better with three clubs than with a full bag

The winner was our 14 year old Cheshire junior Kieran Underwood who scored an impressive 21 points using his rescue club, nine iron and putter to good effect. Five handicapper Kieran got off to a slow start but he came alive on the last six holes with four pars and two birdies including an impressive rescue club shot to around eight feet on the seventh hole that set up a nice two.

Thanks to his great last six holes Kieran held off the challenge of Dave Johnson and Ian Daines who both also scored 21 points and finished in second and third respectively, well done also to six handicapper James Eaton who parred eight out of his nine holes using just a rescue club, pitching wedge and putter.

This Sunday sees the second round of the Winter League taking place and I'm sure that it will be keenly contested with a number of strong pairings, Gareth Eaton and Liam Tyrer are the early pace setters!

Midweek Stableford

The October Midweek Stableford saw another exceptional winning score as Mike Eddison returned a not too shabby 48 points! Mike said he had 'dropped lucky' after his round and he certainly did as he had one of those rare rounds where every shot seemed to come off, he only had one double bogey and every other hole was a par or bogey which is pretty good for a golfer playing off a 27 handicap! As I mentioned earlier Mike is one of those people that has put a lot of work into his game and after regular lessons with our PGA professional Adam Powell he is seeing the rewards, his handicap has now dropped from 28 to 25 in the last two months and I'm sure that it will continue to fall.

22 handicapper Paul Foster had a slightly up and down round but still returned a good 40 point score to take second place and in third place was Andy Margeson with 39 points. I must also mention Alan Tayler who scored a brilliant two two's in his round but he didn't enter the two's sweep - that was a costly mistake Alan you should have more faith in yourself!

Di Sommerville Vase

There were some more good scores from our ladies on Sunday as they contested the Di Sommerville Vase, Keira Wharton didn't get to play a great deal of golf over the summer but despite this she has hit some form as she posted a 41 point winning total including the perfect start of a birdie on the first hole and another birdie on hole fifteen. Keira even had the luxury of not scoring on three of her holes and her handicap has fallen to 22 after her good round.

In second place was Jo Cameron with 40 points and in third place was Lady Captain Ann Rowland also on 40, the highlight of Ann's round was most definitely a fantastic eagle two on the sixth hole when Ann holed her approach shot to the green!

The next ladies competition is the Winter Greensomes on Thursday 29th October at 9.32am.

Improving your game

Sort your grips and shoes out at the same time!

To help get you ready for winter golf we have a great offer on re-gripping your clubs and re-spiking your golf shoes, most people let their golf grips get far too worn and they become shiny and slippy this means that you have to hold the club tighter and tighter and you end up with too much tension in your swing - not ideal for good golf at all! The ground will also become softer and slippier so check your spikes or cleats on your golf shoes and make sure that they give you plenty of grip, if not you are at risk of slipping on the golf course and it will also be harder to keep your footing when swinging the golf club.

With winter approaching now is the ideal time to check your grips, they should be replaced every 18 months or so but most people leave it far too long, remember that the grip is your only contact with the club so it's essential that they are right and feel good. If your grips have lost their tackiness or they look shiny then they are definitely worn out and they should be replaced, new grips start from £5 each including free fitting and we can have a whole set done within 24 hours.

Here is our great offer - if you spend £50 or more on getting your golf clubs re-gripped with us we will also re-spike your golf shoes for you for FREE, so you can kill two birds with one stone and ensure that your grips and shoes are perfect to get you through the winter!

Senior section

Did you know that one of our senior members is a sci-fi author? John Sykes has the pen name Jason Shaw and has recently had a new book published on Amazon Kindle entitled 'The Pyramids of Atlantis', it's a sci-fi time travel novel and if you would like to have a look at it click here.

It certainly looks a good read and John ensures me that his author skills are better than his golf skills!

Well done also to Graham Bower who had an eagle two on the ninth hole last week playing with the seniors, he holed his second shot from 150 yards out, well done Graham!

Next Tuesday the seniors play an 18 hole Stableford starting at the usual time of 9.16am.
