Rhys wins the Scratch Trophy....again!
Young Rhys Nevin Wharton returned to competitive action at Hartford on Sunday to defend his Birdie Consulting Scratch Trophy crown. The previous week plus-two handicapper Rhys had finished third at the Sir Henry Cooper Classic and tied fourth representing England at the Irish Boys Championship at Tuam so he's been in pretty good form.
He started off in scintillating fashion with four birdies in his first six holes but as the Hartford course always does it refused to be taken apart and a bad run of holes on 8, 9 and 10 brought Rhys back to level par. He responded in typically dogged fashion with two more birdies to stand on the seventeenth tee at two under par and with the chance of a new course record, however it wasn't to be as two bogies meant he finished with a level par 69.
The next best gross score was from another Cheshire junior in two handicapper Tom Duncalf with a 75 meaning that Rhys won the trophy for the fourth year running, some achievement!
In the nett section the winner was 16 handicapper Chris Whalley with a fine nett 65. Second place went to another 16 handicapper in Patrick Scanlan with a nett 67 and in third place was big Simon McFarland with a nett 68.
Many thanks once again to Chris Bird for his continued generous sponsorship of the Scratch Trophy and it was great to see such a good number of members competing.

This Saturday sees the July Medal taking place, with the forecast good and the course in excellent condition we should see another good turnout.

Lady Captain's Away Day
Last week saw many of our ladies visit nearby Eaton Golf Club organised by lady captain Annie Rowland. The sun was shining (I know this because I saw Di Sommerville's sun burnt arms the next day!) and by all reports the golf course was in excellent condition and many of the ladies commented how tricky the greens were.
First place went to Elspeth Forbes with a solid score of 33 points around an unfamiliar course, and I believe second and third place went to Christine Paxton and Sue Gunning respectively. Don't forget that the Captain's Day organised by Annie and men's captain Liam Tyrer is fast approaching on Saturday 12th August, there will as usual be evening food and entertainment after the golf and you will soon be able to get your tickets.
The ladies played for the Mid -Summer Cup on Thursday and the weather and scores were good. Joyce Graham emerged as the winner but only after a card playoff against Ann Broster. Both ladies scored 40 Stableford points but it was Joyce that claimed her maiden competition win, well done Joyce!
In third place was Alison Worall with 38 points, Alison had a two on the sixteenth hole. Well done to Di Sommerville (another mention!) and Pauline Leake who also scored twos.
The next ladies competition is on Thursday 9th July, the nine hole charity day competition.
