Greetings from Tim and Paul at Hartford Golf Club
Hartford Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

This is one of the best week's of the year for any golfer as the golf season is now underway and we have The Masters Tournament at the world famous Augusta National just about to commence. The Masters really is a tournament like no other with a fantastic tradition played over one of the most picturesque golf courses in the world that everyone recognises, and the return of Tiger Woods adds even more intrigue to the week. If you haven't got Sky TV full coverage of The Masters will be shown in our clubhouse so why not call in and play nine holes before watching the best players on the planet battle probably the most famous golf course in the world!

The weather this week has finally improved and I'm sure that many of you will now have played your first competitive rounds of golf this season, hopefully with our help we can make this your best season yet! I know that this newsletter is very well read and lots of you find it informative but also make sure that you keep up to date with all the latest news and goings on here at the club by also liking our Facebook (Hartford Golf Club) page and following us on Twitter (@hartfordgolfc) for daily updates.

The season at Hartford got off to a cracking on Saturday as the weather was good and the golf course was in fantastic condition for the Captain's drive in, new Captain Liam Tyrer had the honour of hitting the first shot of the summer and there was a great turn out of members to cheer him on. Despite his nerves and a boisterous crowd Liam hit a cracking shot up the right hand side of the fairway. Well done Liam, probably the best shot you've ever hit on the first!

Captain's Drive In

The captain's drive in on Saturday was followed by the April Medal which had a good entry of 45 players, the scoring was good considering that this was the first competition of the season, 18 handicapper Alan Royle certainly didn't show any rustiness in his game as he scored a nett 63 to take the victory. Alan knew he was going to have a good day when he had four pars to start but actually his round could have been even better as he finished with two double bogey's, this was however offset by birdies on holes thirteen and fifteen.

The form player of the winter was Gareth Eaton and he continued his good run in to the new season as he fired a brilliant nett 64, he really came to life on the back nine scoring a one under par gross 33 and now sees his handicap drop to 6 - the lowest it's ever been! 5 handicapper Steve Bond is another player that always features near the top of the leaderboard and he fired a nett 67 including four birdies to finish in third place.

The next competition is the Spring Stableford this Saturday starting at 12.04pm, good luck also to our team led by Chris Bird that are playing in the third round of the Mail on Sunday Classic at home against Portal on Sunday, let's hope we can get a win!

Remember also that you can enter the Singles Knockout and Pairs Knockout by putting your name on the entry list and paying the £5 entry fee any time before the draw takes place on 25th August, if you're looking for a pairs partner click here to let me know and I can probably fix you up.

Bank Holiday Stableford

The players entered in the Bank Holiday Stableford enjoyed playing a golf course bathed in afternoon sunshine, Stuart Fallows' golf game was certainly hot as he blitzed round the course in 46 points! Stuart played steady golf all the way round scoring on every hole and he especially came to life on the back nine with 24 points including a birdie on the fifteenth. There was a lot of good golf played in Stuart's group as fellow playing partners Dave Shering and Paul Foster came second and third respectively with 43 points and 39 points, Dave fired three birdies in his round but couldn't quite match Stuart's winning total.

Read on below to discover the secret to playing your best golf!

It's no coincidence that when you look at the competition results at Hartford the players with the best scores week in week out have almost always been using equipment custom fitted for them by us. I cannot over state enough the difference this can make to your game, how it can help you play with confidence and help you reach your full golfing potential.

Both weekend competition winners have recently been fitted for new clubs - on Saturday Alan Royle was using his new Callaway irons to good effect and Stuart Fallows recently was fitted for a new Callaway driver, fairway wood and hybrid these contributed massively to what he described as his 'best game of golf ever' on Monday when he scored a massive 46 points to win the Bank Holiday Stableford. Stuart had been struggling a bit with his game but the new woods have transformed his long game and as a result given him new confidence in his game, if you haven't visited us yet for a fitting session you really are missing out!

Masters Predictions

There are plenty of golfers in with a good chance of winning this week at Augusta, world number one Rory McIlroy (6/1) is in good form and he clearly has the game to suit Augusta with his high towering ball flight and length off the tee plus he is trying to complete the famous Grand Slam, the only thing is can he handle the huge amount of pressure and expectancy placed on his shoulders? Young American Jordan Spieth (9/1) has been playing plenty of good golf recently and he has had a victory and string of top ten finishes, he is statistically the best putter on tour this year and I don't think you can win around Augusta if you aren't a good putter, he also has a cool calm demeanour and I would expect him to feature in the top five. Also look out for big hitting Swede Henrik Stenson (20/1), apparently he's been battling a bout of flu recently but he seems to be hitting the ball better than ever and is full of confidence, now could be the perfect time to win his first major.

If you're looking for some longer odds value bets I would have a look at Hideki Matsuyama (60/1), Paul Casey (70/1) and Webb Simpson (150/1) they all hit the ball pretty straight and high, hitting a high ball definitely gives you an advantage at Augusta whilst they've all got decent short games and they've also all showed pretty good form in the past few weeks. Funnily enough these three players are all paired together for the first two days, this could also help their chances if they're all playing well.

Continuing on The Masters theme in the shop available to purchase we have every Nike outfit that Rory McIlroy will be seen wearing this week over the four days of The Masters. You will see a lot of the bright vibrant Volt colour story which is coupled with Nike's dri-fit technology to keep Rory cool and looking his best on the golf course.

Click here to see the outfit he will be wearing during the first round - the Nike Modern Major Moment polo with white dri-fit trousers and Lunar Control 3 shoes.

Hole in one news

Well done to our vice-captain Paul Underwood who scored his first ever hole in one this week, he was on a golfing trip to Scotland and it came at the Cardrona Golf Club. I'm sure that the drinks will be on Paul when he gets back to celebrate!

Outgoing seniors captain Graham Bower organised an away trip as his swan song to Hill Valley Golf Club in Shropshire last week, unfortunately the weather wasn't good with heavy rain and strong winds making an already long course play even tougher. Ken Powell battled the elements the best out of the 28 seniors that played to score 35 points, which was a great score considering the conditions, so good that he was well ahead of Alan Tayler in second on 30 points and third was Phil Pickering on 29 points.

Next Tuesday the seniors play a handicap qualifying nine hole Stableford starting at 9.16am.

After the lady captain's drive in Stableford was washed out last week it was re-arranged for Thursday morning, thankfully the weather was much kinder to the ladies on the second attempt. The winner was Collette Walling with a 17 point total, she just edged out Elspeth Forbes on a card play off after she also returned 17 points, Jean Clare came third with 16 points. Here's the winner photographed with lady captain Annie Rowland.

Remember that from this week the ladies Thursday morning golf, which is a nine hole Stableford, will start at 9.32am. This is the new start time for the ladies every week from now on.

  • Ladies 9 hole Stableford - Thursday 9th April
  • Spring Stableford - Saturday 11th April 12.04pm
  • Seniors 9 hole Stableford -Tuesday 14th April 9.16am
  • April Midweek Medal - Wednesday 15th April
  • Ladies 9 hole roll up - Thursday 16th April 9.32am
