Greetings from Tim and Paul at Hartford Golf Club
Hartford Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

We are now definitely on official countdown to The Masters tournament in Augusta, this is the event that really gets the golf season going and it's now less than two weeks until it commences on Thursday 9th April!

You can tell that the world's top players are also on Masters countdown as the top five played last week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, interestingly the players seemed to struggle on the greens and they didn't seem to be up to their usual quality, world number one Rory Mcilroy played well from tee to green but struggled with the short stick. Florida born Callaway staffer Matt Every didn't let the poor greens hold him back as he stormed to the top of the leaderboard to win the tournament for the second year running with a mind boggling total score of 18 under par.

Next week we will bring you a preview of the players that we think you should look out for at Augusta!

Matt Every's winning equipment:

  • Driver: Callaway Big Bertha V-Series 9 degrees (Fujikura Pro 73X)
  • Fairway: Callaway X2 Hot 3 Deep 14.5 degrees (Fujikura Motore Speeder 8.3 X-Stiff) & Big Bertha Alpha 18 degrees (Nventick Nunchuk X-Stiff)
  • Hybrid: Callaway X Utility Prototype 2 iron (KBS Tour V 125 X-Stiff)
  • Irons: Callaway Apex Pro 4-9 (Dynamic Gold AMT S400 shafts)
  • Wedges: Callaway Mack Daddy 2 wedges 47, 54 and 60 degrees (Dynamic Gold S400)
  • Putter: Odyssey Works number 9 34.5 inches with SuperStroke Flatso 1.0 putter grip
  • Ball: Callaway Speed Regime 3

It's that time of year again when the club AGM's will be taking place, the dates and times are as follows:

  • Ladies AGM Thursday 26th March 7.30pm
  • Main Club AGM Sunday 29th March 6pm (9 hole competition before at 2pm)

All members or even prospective members are encouraged to attend, trophies will be presented from the winter season and it's also your chance to raise any points you would like to have addressed or give us any feedback involved in the running of the Club.

The next competition is a nine hole pre- AGM Stableford this Sunday 29th March with a 2pm start time, then after that it's the start of the summer season with the Captain's Drive in with Liam Tyrer and the April Medal taking place on Saturday 4th April. It's good to see the entry sheet for this competition is already filling up nicely, if you haven't got your name down then make sure you do!

Trade in your old bag and get £20 OFF a new one

You're probably aware that we have a great promotion in store at the moment, if you trade in your old golf bag (no matter what the condition) you will get £20 OFF a new 2015 Motocaddy, TaylorMade or Callaway golf bag. If your current bag is looking a bit tired or worn or there are broken zips or holes in the pockets, now is the ideal time to upgrade to a nice new bag ready for the start of the season.

The promotion is only running until the end of March so you need to call in before it ends as it's an offer that won't be repeated this year!

This week we bring you a profile of our incoming lady captain Annie Rowland, Annie's captain's drive in takes place this Sunday:

What is your current handicap and when did you start playing golf? - 'My current handicap is 31 and my best was 29 a few years ago. I've been playing golf for 5 years and this has been a great excuse to escape from my husband who has been under the illusion that I am a potential sporting superstar! Hello?!'

What's your favourite/least favourite hole at Hartford? - 'My favourite hole at Hartford is the 7th because occasionally I can hit a decent shot into the green from the tee and be in with a chance of a good score. My least favourite hole is the 3rd, here you can enter a world of pain in the space of a few wayward shots!'

Your favourite course that you have played? - 'A strong favourite golf course of mine is at Isla Canela which is in south-west Spain separated from Portugal by the River Guardiana. It's quite a challenging course with lots of water features to contend with. The gin and tonics in the clubhouse are special and large enough to create that warm fuzzy feeling and helps one to meditate on how great a sport golf can be. However, the Tat International Golf Club in Belek Turkey, despite the name, is a wonderful course. It can be a bit busy in summer though. When I played there with my husband some years ago, it was like being in the January sales. There were so many buggies whizzing around the course it looked like the Klondike Goldrush!'

If you could play any course in the world where would it be? - 'I would love the chance to play at Valderrama because it's a prestigious, expansive and beautifully manicured course. Of course with my handicap I would want spectators kept to the bare minimum. Hey there is a chance I could bump into Miguel Angel Jimenez - please!'

What's the best round of your life? - 'My best round at Hartford was during the 2011 season when I was fortunate enough to win the Midweek Singles Trophy. I never imagined I would ever have my name on the Honours Board and this was and still is an exhilarating feeling. But I must say that winning the Pairs Knock-Out Competition in the same year, and with Sandra Peake, a terrific, gutsy partner, gave me as much pleasure.'

Who would be in your dream fourball? - 'My Mum was a member at Sandiway Golf Club for many years and played golf into her late 70's. Unfortunately, she retired before I began playing. We never had the chance to play a round together. So my dream fourball would be Jean Murray, my mum and her hero Fred Couples, while I would love the opportunity to play a round of golf with Lee Westwood.'

Karl Morris visiting Pryors Hayes

Europe's number one mind coach Karl Morris is holding a workshop at Pryors Hayes Golf Club on Wednesday 1st April. Karl has worked with Open champion Louis Oosthuizen as well as other leading tour players, it will be an evening well worth attending and you can learn some of the 'inside secrets' he has used to help players reach their full potential and win major tournaments. It's a very informative evening, which I guarantee will help improve your golf, to find out about some of the features of the evening, click here.

If you're serious about your golf you shouldn't miss this, Karl doesn't do many events like this so it's a rare chance to improve your mental appraoch to your golf. Tickets are available now at £29.95 from Pryors Hayes, places are limited so if you would like to reserve a spot please click here to contact me.

The seniors AGM took place on Tuesday, outgoing senior captain Graham Bower expressed how much he had enjoyed his year of captaincy and he then passed over the reins to new senior captain Roger Wilkinson. Winter prizes were also presented as the seniors section goes from strength to strength.

The pre-AGM 9 hole competition was won by the team of Pete Wildin, Paul Green, Bob Bowen and Pete Dawson with a score of 90 points.

Next week 28 of the seniors have an away day at Hill Valley Golf Club in Shropshire, this will be Graham's swan song as captain. If you are a senior golfer and not playing in the away day there are still a handful of tee times booked at the usual 9.16am start time.

Coming up this Sunday is the Lady Captain's drive in, the new Lady Captain driving in will be Annie Rowland and it would be great if all our ladies could be there to support her as she takes over from Jill Bebbington. Annie will be driving off at 12.04 pm on the Sunday and there is also a nine hole competition taking place afterwards, if you would like to play please put your name down on the entry sheet on the ladies notice board.

The ladies club crested clothing from Glenmuir has now arrived and it looks very good, so if you have ordered an item you can now collect it from the store, if you haven't ordered something we have ordered some extras so you won't miss out!

The next ladies competition is their last of the winter season - the Winter Greensomes, which is 18 holes, next Thursday morning.

  • Ladies Winter Greensomes - Thursday 26th March 9am
  • Lady Captain's Drive in Stableford - Sunday 29th March 12.04pm
