Let's start this week by talking about putting, it is part of the game that everyone can still practice during lockdown, and let's face it - nobody works on their putting enough!

Use this time at home to perfect your stroke on the carpet and the work you 'putt in now' (excuse the pun!) could really help your game when we are back playing again.

Here is a nice video from teaching professional Adrian Hill - with some simple set up keys, his secret to holing more putts is a consistent set up, have a watch and see if you can implement this into your putting routine.

A change to the competition bookings sytem

Hopefully we'll be back here soon

As we seem to have reached the peak of the pandemic in the UK there are signs that we may return to golf in the next few weeks. But for the time being, we have removed the option to book a tee-time on our website and we will resume it when we have a definite opening date.

We don't know when we will be able to play competitions again either - remember that we still need to play the Winter League Final! But when we do return there will be a difference in how you register to play in a competition - the old paper sheets on the noticeboard will be gone and you will have to put your name down for a competition through the tee booking system on our website or through the masterscoreboard app for your smartphone.

If you're a member and haven't already registered to book tee-times on our website you can do that by clicking here.

It will obviously be safer to book online but we also believe it is the way forward in avoiding members putting their names down twice or not turning up. You will even be able to book for a competitions in the clubhouse on our laptop if you don't have access to a computer or smartphone. It will also be an easy way for you to check or book your tee-times at any time of the day - even when the clubhouse is closed.

As we get nearer to re-opening the course and resuming competitions we will bring you further details of the booking system but if you have any questions then get in touch.

This time last year.....

Barnes Trophy top ten

This time last year we were just about to play the Barnes Trophy, and it was a close finish. Young Jacob Hulse had the best score but as he hadn't played in 3 qualifying competitions there was another name to go on the trophy...

Winner - Dave Johnson

It was left-hander Dave Johnson who took the trophy with his nett 65, here he is accepting the trophy from Tim. Who knows when we will play the Barnes Trophy this year but we hear that Dave is practicing hard in the garden - ready to defend his crown!

There’s much debate as to golf’s greatest rivalry. From one era to the next, elite players have gone head-to-head and produced some truly memorable moments on the course.

At this current time, there’s a whole host of young talent jostling for position at the top of the rankings: McIlroy, Koepka, Rahm and Thomas to name just a few. However, in terms of a rivalry between two golfers, we don’t seem to have that right now.

Fact of the week

In 1971, Alan Shepard – the first American astronaut in space – became the first person to hit a golf ball on the moon. Here’s what he said to the USGA after landing back on earth:

“I shanked the first one; it rolled into a crater about 40 yards away. The second one, I kept my head down. I hit it flush and it went at least 200 yards.”

Weekly challenge

Much like the pitch shot that fizzes onto the green and stops dead on the second or third bounce, the flop shot always looks spectacular when you pull it off. It’s the inspiration behind this week’s challenge, so grab your highest lofted wedge and take to the garden for our Flop Shot Challenge.

The set-up

Like the images above, place a garden trug or bucket on top of a table facing away from the house with the aim of landing the ball inside. You can also play this game by putting something tall in front of you – garden fork or washing line – that you need to get the ball up-and-over.

Not confident?

Flop shots aren’t the easiest shot to play, which is why they do look great when executed to perfection. If you’d rather attempt something different, you can modify this challenge by placing your garden trug on the floor and see how many you can chip in – but it can’t bounce first!

Golf at home

Hopefully, you’re finding our Golf at Home drills useful in keeping your golf game ticking over during lockdown – maybe, even improving it?! For this week we’ve gone back to basics and have found an effective way of checking one of golf’s key fundamentals…

Alignment is key

Getting your set-up spot on is easier said than done, but getting it right more often than not will certainly help your golf game on the course.

One part that often changes over time is our alignment, which incorporates far more than just where the clubface is aiming.

How to check

Find some flooring in your house or garden that runs in straight lines. Place a ball down and set up as if you’re hitting a straight shot.

From here, check whether your feet, hips and shoulders are running parallel to each other by using the flooring as a visual cue.
