Have you taken the bucket challenge yet?
Quite a few of you have taken up the offer of a FREE bucket of balls to trial some of the new demo irons we have in stock, and so far the feedback has been very positive with many golfers seeing increases in distance but also improved accuracy. As I said last week some of the new irons on the market really do offer ground breaking technology with lighter shafts, increased size of sweet spots and super fast ball speeds off the face, increasing distance by up to 2 clubs. I know this is a big claim so to see for yourself if they work bring your own 7 iron down to the range and we will give you a FREE basket of balls to hit the new Callaway, TaylorMade and PING demo 7 irons and compare them to your own, in the majority of cases golfers are picking up more distance and improved accuracy!
Every week we will be bringing you a profile of a member here at Hartford Golf Club, this week we bring you another one of our PGA professionals and member of our coaching staff, Adam Powell.
How long have you been playing golf and what was your handicap as an amateur? – 'I have been playing since I was 12 , I started by hitting balls with my dad's sand wedge in our fields. Joined Sandiway Golf Club as a 15 year old and first handicap was 14. By age 17 I was off +1 and turned professional at 19'
How many holes in one have you had? – 'Three so far. A perfect 5 iron to ace the 210 yard 10th at Vale Royal Abbey. A cheeky gap wedge that spun back into the hole at the 142 yard 7th at Hadley Wood this year before the Foremost national championship.
My favourite though will always be my ace on the 300 yard Par 4 17th at Sandiway in 2006, a perfect slam dunk from a little draw hit over the tree. I am now the proud recipient of a plaque situated on that hole to commemorate the shot!'
Your favourite course that you have played? – 'Valderrama - quite simply a perfect test of golf where hitting it straight simply isn't good enough!! I will be going back in 2015 - anyone want to join me?!'
Your best round of golf? – 'Lowest score of 63 in practice at Sandiway. My most memorable round would be at West Lancashire Golf Club - a 5 under round of 67 in horrendous conditions to win by 7 in a Players Tour event. The wind was so strong that I had to hit a 3 wood to a 180 yard par 3 (extra 8 club wind!! Normally for me a 7 iron), it seems to be the worse the conditions the better I play!'
Favourite professional golfer? – 'Tiger woods - the man that just raised the bar for everything in golf when I was growing up and pushed everyone to get better and improve.'
Who would you play with in your dream fourball? - 'Tiger woods - to watch and learn from his determination, Gary Player - a gentleman of the game and could listen to him talk all day! And Bubba Watson - I will try to hit it past him and out psyche him!! ’
What one piece of advice would you give an amateur golfer? - 'My favourite quote sums it up..."if you always do what you always did. You always get what you always got".
Quite simply don't tinker and struggle along. Come and see me and get a vision and structure for your game. Out on the golf course if it's not going so well SLOW DOWN, and if you don't practice after you have lessons you will not get anywhere!!'
Captain's Christmas Party coming up this Saturday!
Our Captain, Chris Bird, wants everyone to get into the festive spirit and join him for a Christmas gathering in the bar on Saturday 13th December after the Winter League. He will be providing mince pies, mulled wine and some yule tide themed music from around 2pm onwards. Everyone is welcome including members and guests, Christmas jumpers or santa hats are most definitely the preferred dress code!
The seniors and ladies have really been getting into the Christmas spirit this week, here are some of the outfits on show so far this week, let's see if we can get some even better ones on Saturday!
The December Medal took place on Saturday and with a cold wind blowing across the course conditions proved difficult with the CSS score on the day being 68. Only two players beat this and the victory was taken by 5 handicapper Steve Bond who made somewhat of a rare winter Medal appearance to fire three birdies in a fine round of nett 67. Runner up Gary Cashmore was unlucky to lose out on a card playoff to Steve but he had the consolation of coming second in his first ever competitive round at Hartford, not a bad start Gary! In third place was Bob Bowen who overcame scoring a snow man on the first to battle round for a nett 68.
The Seniors Christmas lunch took place on Tuesday with a great turn out of 40 golfers, before that they played a yellow ball team competition with the winners being captain Graham Bower, Geoff Dodd, Roy Strefford and Paul Frost.
After this the seniors enjoyed a Christmas lunch and presented the prizes from this year's competitions, here are the prize winners photographed.
The nine hole Christmas Stableford Waltz was played on Monday with 32 ladies staying to enjoy Christmas lunch afterwards. The winning team consisted of Sue Friar, Chris Lever and Colette Walling with a score of 42 points.
The ladies also played a three clubs and a putter challenge last week, Elspeth Forbes played some fine golf to score 18 points, despite not even scoring on the last hole! Well played Elspeth and we hope you enjoy your Christmas over in Germany! In second place was Ann Broster with 14 points and third was Sarah Dee with 13 points.
