March Medal review It was the penultimate weekend competition of the winter season on Saturday and we finally had a sunny day for it! Scoring was good - the top twelve players scored 37 points or more and the winner was a player who has been our most consistent over the winter period. John Backhouse has come in the top ten in every competition he has played since September, surprisingly though he hadn't gained a singles victory but he put this right on Saturday with a 42 point winning score. As a result of John's excellent play this winter he was leading the Order of Merit even before this Medal win but it was double delight for John as with one competition left he has now sewn that title up as he is 16 points clear of nearest challengers Justin Hyam and Ian Daines (who won the summer Order of Merit). John was off 25 in September but now his handicap is 18 and surely this will fall further as we enter the summer season. In the Medal competition, it was Martin Shaw who came second with 41 points after a card play-off, Chris Newton was third also on 41 points. We just have the March Bogey now to play on Saturday 21st March before the summer season starts officially with the April Medal and Captain's drive-in on Saturday 4th April at 12:04pm.

Seniors Winter League round up The seniors Winter League concluded on Tuesday with the sixth and final round and Roger Farley was crowned a convincing winner having lead throughout the winter. The best 4 scores of 6 to count format saw Roger finish on 68 points, nearest challenger Graham Bower ended up on 64 points. Jim Scott was the winner on the day with 20 points, having invested in some new custom-fitted Wilson clubs recently, Jim has won two of this last three competitions and after Alan Nevin also won with his new Wilson irons it just shows the improvements to your game a new set of correctly fitted clubs can bring! It was a good Tuesday for the scousers as Phil Evans came second on 19 points - his best finish yet with the seniors, and Alan Phillips completed the top three with 18 points. |

Drive for show, putt for dough
We've all heard the phrase 'drive for show, putt for dough' but considering that putting equates to 30-50% of your shots on the course there is an element of truth in the saying.
If you can struggle with your putting on occasions, then the new Cleveland Frontline putters can come to the rescue, available in a number of nice head shapes, including mallets or blades, and fitted with a nice feeling thick Sink grip - they really inspire confidence on the greens. Through the clever use of tungsten and weight distribution, these putters remain very stable through impact which has the effect of keeping the putter face square and the ball rolling on the right line. As we mentioned above, the new Frontline putters are very reasonably priced too at £129.99, and let’s face it - that’s nothing compared to the price of a top new driver!
Pop in-store to see the full range and see how they can benefit your game!

Whatever the weather
Even when the weather is bad, Head Greenkeeper Dan Ashelby keeps himself busy, you will have noticed the bunkers on the course were retaining a lot of water so Dan was keen to sort out their drainage.
All blockages have now been cleared and the old clay drainage linked into the system has been de-silted and is now working as good when it was first laid 70+ years ago. Even after the wet winter we now have very few bunkers holding water which shows the immediate benefits of Dan’s hard work.
Here are some photos and a video showing the build-up of silt in the drainage pipes.

Don't just take our word for it... |
What do we want? Straighter shots. When do we want it? Now! Starting the ball on the right line is key and, by watching the video below, you'll learn one of the simplest ways to do exactly that. |
‘One of the important things about good golf is consistency and repetition’ We all know that’s easier said than done so when there's a way of creating consistency, it makes sense to take advantage. That is the point of Golf Pride’s ALIGN grips, which feature a raised ridge on the back (the red strip) to ensure repetitive hand placement, helping to keep the face square throughout the swing. Even better still, you can get a FREE ALIGN grip by coming to see us for a grip fitting! Click the link for more information.
