October Medal review Despite the inclement weather, we still managed to play the October Medal off the summer competition tees. As is tradition in the winter season we played the Medal as a Stableford format just to make things a bit easier! So the course was playing it's full length and just two players beat their handicaps. Martin Shaw was looking like he might achieve his first club victory as he scored 39 points (including a blob on the 8th hole), but in the end his hopes were dashed when Tim Barnes signed for a winning round of 40 points. The 18th hole proved crucial for Tim after a fine 7 iron approach set up a four-point birdie and, in a very consistent round, he scored at least one point on every hole. Martin was still happy with his best competition score yet and to see his handicap fall by 2 shots. Tim will also be happy with how his newly fitted TaylorMade clubs are working for him. Since he put the new P790 irons in his bag, he has won the singles knockout trophy and now victory in the October Medal. Well done to Josh Crofts (35 points) taking third place in just his fourth competition and special mention to John Backhouse who birdied the fifth hole for an amazing 5 points! John was flying after nine holes with 24 points but unfortunately he ran out of steam on the second nine. |

Winter League is coming...
Next up is the Winter League which starts this Saturday at 11am - so far 30 pairs have entered, including defending champs Kieran and Paul Underwood, and it's still not too late. The format is a pairs 9 hole betterball Stableford. 8 qualifying rounds are played between October and the end of January next year, the 5 best scores count and, in the league, the top 8 pairs progress through to the knockout quarter-finals stage. Last year's first round was won by Pete Kinsey and Jay Moran with 26 points and there should be similar scores this year with some strong pairings entered. The entry fee is just £5 per pair - but make sure that you have paid by the time the first round starts on Saturday. You cannot enter once we start.

The Autumn Trophy The Autumn Trophy is the last ladies competition of the year played off the LGU tees and, as such, it always offers a stiff test, even more so after all the rain that has fallen recently. In fact, Keira Wharton battled through plenty of wet weather on Sunday afternoon to score 35 points which proved to be the trophy-winning score - as it was also Keira's birthday she had double cause for celebration on what turned out to be a very good day for her!
Last year's Autumn Trophy winner, Lady Captain Chris Paxton, put up a spirited defence of her title with 31 points in second place and Sandra Hornby was in third place also on 31 points. This was Keira's second ladies victory of the year and, in what has been a solid season, her handicap has fallen from 22 to 20. |

The Autumn pairs final takes place this Friday as Julie Daines and Wendy D'Arcy take on Sandra Peake and Annie Rowland in what should be a very closely contested game. |
