July Medal review It was a good couple of days for Julie Daines last week, our ladies club champion went to Rudding Park to compete in the Yorkshire NHS Bowl and won it with a great 40 point score. However back on home ground Julie went even better the next day and scored her best gross score yet with an 83 giving her a nett 62 to win the July Medal. Julie's round contained 5 pars and a birdie on the 13th and she is now down to an 18 handicap, which she stated was her goal in her members profile a few weeks ago. So its mission accomplished, well done Julie, we're sure there is more to come! Jay Moran was the early clubhouse leader with a 64, he must know the course very well now after walking it to look for his keys the other night! In the end Jay finished third with Bob Bowen showing he is back to full fitness in second place, also on nett 64.

Captain's Charity Day This Saturday it's one of our main events of the year and it should be a good one! It's the joint Captain's Charity Day and there is a fun 18 hole competition involving teams of 4 followed by a BBQ on our lovely new patio and a fun quiz. But the most important thing is that all proceeds will go towards Alan and Christine's chosen charities of Prostate Cancer Awareness and Cheshire Young Carers. Alan and Christine have worked really hard to organise this day and there are some great prizes up for grabs, including a £300 voucher for Golfino Kuntsford, a £50 voucher for Chime, fourball vouchers for various local courses and much more. |
It's not too late to put your names down for what should be a great day.... it's worth the admission fee alone to see Alan Tayler get thrown in the pond! Five, seven day or points members can all play on Saturday and the dress code is light or sky blue (perfect for Dave Johnson!). There are still places left at 11.16am, 11:48am, and 12:28pm and everyone is welcome for the BBQ so bring your partner, friends and family - the more the merrier! If you can't make it...why not donate a raffle prize? It would also really help us if you could buy your BBQ tickets in advance, available now from the Pro-Shop at just £10 for members and £15 for guests. Click here to let us know if you would like a tee time or BBQ tickets.

Into the Cheshire League semi-finals Our junior team completed a great achievement on Saturday as they won their group in the Mid-Cheshire Junior League in the first year of participating. The team of Joel Cann, Kieran Underwood, Lucy Barks, Ben Barrow and Javier Lang went to Astbury (who were our main rivals) for the final round and they came away as group winners against some strong clubs such as Sandiway and Delamere Forest. Star performer on the day was 15 year old Lucy Barks who scored 43 points and was the highest individual scorer on the day, our junior team now compete in the semi-finals of the Cheshire junior league. |

In the junior bogey competition the next day, Lucy capped off a great weekend by finishing an amazing 10up in a round that included 4 birdies! The lesson she had with Adam Powell on Friday clearly paid off. Lucy's progress this summer has been fantastic with her handicap starting at 49 in March and now down to 22, this is even before her school summer holidays begin! William Wallis-Hedges also had a pre-competition lesson (they must work!) and scored 8up in second place and Max Beech completed the top three with 4up. The next junior competition is a Stableford on 28th July.

Be King of the Hill with Adrian's advice... We've now got to the 4th hole with Adrian's tips and if you've been taking them in each week hopefully it's helping your course management and improving your scoring. The first 3 holes can be a tough start but the 4th hole can give a bit of respite and hopefully offer you a birdie opportunity, here are Adrian's 3 key to success.... 1. It's tempting to pull your driver out and have a go for the green, but the hole suits a draw shape (right to left) and 90% of amateurs hit the ball the other way with a fade. So my key advice is to play the hole as a two-shotter. Hit a club off the tee that will leave you a nice yardage for your approach shot, even if it is just a 5 or 6 iron to leave yourself say 80 yards, and aim well right away from the bunker on the left.
2. The key to this hole is hitting the green in two. Sometimes the pin can be tucked near an edge or behind a bunker so my advice is forget going for the flag and aim for the middle of the green every time. Don't go flag chasing and still treat the hole with respect, if you miss slightly there can be some steep run off areas around the green. The putting surface isn't huge so if you hit the middle you will never have a particularly long putt to the hole. |
|
3. The key to good golf is to know your distances, I use a Bushnell laser but a GPS watch works just as well and make sure you know exactly how far every club in your bag goes. I know that if I hit a 7 iron from the tee, I will have around 60 yards left for my approach shot which is a distance I feel confident with. If I then hit the middle of the green then I'm looking at a birdie putt every time without too much effort! Let me know how you get on with these tips and next week we'll tackle the tricky 5th hole.

Open Championship preview It's not long now until the Open Championship commences at Royal Portrush. The last time it was held there was 1951 and the Irish Open was last played there 7 years ago so picking a winner may prove a little more tricky. As ever with a Major and a field of 156 players, we think it's worth making a few each-way bets on players that have a good chance of finishing in the top 10, here's our 5 to look out for:
|
|
Matt Wallace (40/1) - A good finish last week in the Scottish Open, a player who isn't short of form or confidence and the bigger the stage the better he seems to do. Matt Kuchar (28/1) – Ok, he might not be a popular winner but if it gets windy his low ball flight and accuracy off the tee will be huge strengths. Padraig Harrington (125/1) - We had to pick an Irishman so who better than a player with 2 previous Open wins? Padraig constantly tinkers with his swing but he seems to be hitting on some long lost consistency and will relish the wind and rain which is forecast. Rafael Cabrera-Bello (55/1) - Finished in the top 5 in the 2012 Irish Open at Portrush and in this year’s version too, a player who is incredibly consistent and his accuracy off the tee and strong short game means that he could feature. Gary Woodland (55/1) - Surely these odds can't be right for the guy who has just won the US Open? He missed the cut last week in America but maybe his mind was already on Ireland and must be worth a bet at 55/1? Remember all 4 days of the Open Championship will be shown live on Sky TV in our clubhouse, the course looks fantastic and it should be a great tournament. Good luck if you've bought an Open sweepstake ticket.

Custom fitting matters... Regular readers of our newsletter will know that we talk of the benefits of custom fitting at great length and it can help ANY golfer, here is just one example of a recent successful fitting session.... Bob Marsden was struggling with accuracy on his driver, he had been fitted at a well-known high street chain hitting into a net. His 80mph swing speed indicated he needed a light, regular flex but in reality his quick tempo and struggle for control meant that we couldn't just fit him by numbers and his driver wasn't working with his confidence being low.
|
We tried a number of combinations and soon found out that Steve was much more confident with a heavier, stiffer shaft that was also shorter than standard by 1/2". The improvements were huge and Steve responded to the extra shaft weight by picking up distance and more importantly accuracy. In theory the shaft wouldn't suit Steve's clubhead speed but player feedback and actual performance is hugely important, there is no 'fit all' method to custom fitting, we know every golfer is different and everyone can benefit from a fitting session. Don't miss out and book your expert fitting here.

Golf clothing has come a long way from the old-style knickerbockers worn in the early 1900s - you can hardly imagine popping to the supermarket in a pair of those today. Fortunately, these days, golf brands make clothing that is high performing on the course but looks good enough to set the trend off it too. |

Take this polo from Galvin Green, which has really caught our eye this season. The yellow and black design drips a classy yet modern look that is so versatile it is guaranteed to be something of a head turner away from the course as well as on it.
The Monte polo is a worthy addition to any golfing wardrobe, so come on down and take a closer look at Galvin Green's range next time you're at the club.
