Scratch Trophy review

Once again thank you to member Chris Bird who continues his generous sponsorship of the Birdie Consulting Scratch Trophy and provides all the prizes.

This is one of the few competitions we play that favours the low handicappers as the name that goes on the board is the player with the best gross score. In the end it was a battle of the DJs’ as 6 handicapper David Jones and 11 handicapper Dave Johnson both returned scores of 76.

Course Manager David Jones’s back nine was superior (including birdies on 12 and 15) and it meant Dave Johnson had to settle for another card play-off runner up position. It's the first time David has his name on the board at Hartford and he joins an illustrious list!

Best nett went to the in-form Stuart Gray with a fine nett 64, the longest drive winner was Kieran Underwood, and nearest the pin went to Gareth Eaton.

This Saturday it's the big one as we play for the Club Championship starting at 11am. Tee-times have already been drawn and the entry sheet can be viewed by clicking here.

Ladies lowdown....

The ladies played for another board competition last week - the Midsummer Trophy and the best score came on the Sunday from the form lady Alanna Grogan. Alanna scored a blistering 40 points including 22 on the back nine and a birdie two on the 14th hole.

None of the Thursday players could get near Alanna’s score, next best was Lady Captain Chris Paxton with 33 points. Alanna gets her name on the board for the first time. After breaking her leg early in the year, Alanna’s golf has been incredible with a handicap reduction from 25 in January to 19 now.

Seniors Summary

The seniors played an 18 hole Stableford last week, unfortunately it coincided with a heavy down pour that didn’t relent all morning.

All players that complete their rounds in awful conditions deserve praise and Andy Margeson’s winning score of 42 points was hugely impressive.

Andy is now for his bright outfits but his golf was also sparkling on a gloomy day and he fired 3 birdies....and now off 11.8 Andy is one of the lowest handicap seniors.

In second place was Andy Goolding on 38 points and Ian Bullen was third on 34.

Be king of the Hill with Adrian’s advice...

Hopefully you found Adrian Hill’s tips last week of use and maybe some of you put his advice into action.

Whilst you can’t play like the pros, there is no reason why you can’t think like them and here are his 3 tips for playing our tricky par 3 second hole.

1. The golden rule on this hole...AIM LEFT!!! There is no future in missing the green right and flirting with the out of bounds. Forget aiming at the flag on this hole, instead aim at the row of trees left of the green. You would be surprised by how many shots will kick in from there onto the dance floor and even if they don’t, it leaves you a much easier chip shot.

2. A rule from last week applies again...CLUB UP! It’s an uphill tee shot and if the flag is at the back of the green, there is over a 20 yard difference from the front. You will hardly ever go past the pin as the tiers on the green will kill your approach shot, so don’t be afraid to club up.

3. Even if you hit the green don’t be disheartened if you three putt. It’s probably the trickiest green on the course and at a stroke index of 7 off the yellow tees, most of you are expected to score a bogey at best on this hole. The best route to a par is to hit the green and two putt but don’t be too disheartened early in your round if you don’t as there are plenty of easier holes to come!!

A classic piece of golfing attire is the club crested shirt, which is something we're able to offer you thanks to our friends at Glenmuir.

They've been creating stylish golf clothing since 1891 and specialise in the art of cresting; so much so that the European Ryder Cup team used them for every event between 1987 and 2014.

Are you focusing on the wrong thing?

As soon as the ball has left the putter face, we know whether it’s going to be good or not. It’s like a sixth sense, right? But what constitutes a good putt? Many golfers let the final outcome decide this – i.e. whether the ball ends up in the hole or not – but that is arguably well out of our control. So, perhaps it's time to refocus on what we can control?

There are only two things we can really control when it comes to putting. The first is starting the ball on the correct line. Take Tiger Woods for example; the 15-time major winner focuses on a blade of grass he wants the ball to roll over immediately in front of him, which brings the intended target much closer to impact.

The second is getting the ball rolling correctly, which means imparting top spin as quickly as possible after impact rather than having it jumping and skidding in the air.

One way to control our putting is by utilising the technology in TaylorMade’s stunning Spider X putter.

It features an improved Pure Roll insert that has 45-degree grooves to help generate the aforementioned top spin as quickly as possible. The updated insert also produces a better sound and feel at contact, which many of you will love.
