June Medal review

What better way to celebrate the day of your 40th birthday than by winning the June Medal with a fine round of nett 62! That's exactly what Vice-Captain Chris Whalley did on Saturday, not only did he take the scalp of Ian Daines in the singles knockout on Friday, he then rounded off a brilliant weekend with a Medal victory on his special milestone day.

Playing off 11, Chris’ round had gone steadily and he was just 6 over par after eleven holes but he then went into overdrive and reeled off back to back birdies on holes 13 and 14. The other five holes he parred - so Chris played the difficult last 7 holes in a brilliant two-under par gross giving him a nett 62.

Paul Underwood had his best gross score at Hartford with a 76 to give him a nett 63 but he had to settle for second place and let birthday boy Chris enjoy the victory. Third place went to Joel Cann with a nett 65 on a day of low scoring - a total of nine players beat or matched their handicaps.

This week we play for the Maddock Trophy as it starts at 12:04pm prompt - as we are sending you out in fourballs tee-time intervals have been increased to every 10 minutes.

Captain's Corner

'Amazingly I have now been Captain for over 2 months and it's flown by so here is my first report - we have already played two majors and well done to the winners Kieran Underwood and Dave Johnson.

It's good to see the competition sheets with plenty of names on, and also that the Club has nearly 300 members! The Thursday night roll ups are getting busier and if any members want to play with potential new members then please come along on the Thursday evenings.

Dave and Harlie are doing a fantastic job on the course and it's looking as good as ever, it's good to see them both playing as members too. The team won their first 9 Cheshire hole league match and it's great to see our junior team sitting at the top of the table in the MCJL.

One last note...... there are still a handful of members who need to pay the final balance for the away weekend in August at Breadsall Priory, if you could let me have the money as soon as possible - we have 24 names confirmed.

Seniors section

Chris Lee was happy to see his beloved football team Man City win the Premier League recently and he emulated them as he sat at the top of the table in the latest 18 hole Seniors Stableford.

Chris had a barn-storming round of 45 points, out in 22 and back in 23 points with the highlight of his round being a birdie two on the 16th hole. Andy Margeson turned plenty of heads with his bright outfit to match the sunshine and showers of the day and his 41 point total was good enough for second place. Frank Yarwood completed the top three with 39 points.

Ladies news...

A total of 27 ladies took part in Lady Captain's Away Day organised by Chris Paxton last Thursday held at nearby Vicars Cross Golf Club in Chester.

The weather didn’t look very promising at first but the sun eventually shone and a warm afternoon ensued! There were nine teams of 3 players, with the best 2 scores counting on each hole. The winning team were Jo Cameron, Kath Hough and Di Sommerville with 60 points.

The winner of nearest the pin in two shots on the 9th hole was Alanna Grogan and the winner of nearest the pin on the 18th hole was Elspeth Forbes - she always has to win something!

Don't forget that this Sunday and then the following Thursday is the big one for the ladies - the Ladies Club Championship - the draw will take place this Thursday after the 9 hole Stableford.

Who doesn’t love the month of June? Long evenings, blistering sunshine (might be a little optimistic here) and plenty of opportunities to hit the course. With much of the season left to go and more competitions on the horizon, it’s time to take note of how you’ve been playing so far this year.

Hopefully, you've been playing regularly to your handicap or, better still, shooting under it. If that’s the case then happy days, keep up the good work!
