Barnes Trophy Review 17 year old Jacob Hulse has made quite an impact in his first two competitions at Hartford, he could have been a double major winner by now but due to club rules he needs to play in three qualifying competitions before he can get his name on the board. The way Jacob is playing he will soon achieve a first official victory and he has aspirations to work in golf and become a coach so he will get plenty of chance to reduce his handicap over the summer. Jacob’s latest good round was a nett 64 and four of those shots were dropped on the 11th hole. Two birdies on the 5th and 17th holes nicely offset these dropped shots.

Dave Johnson just missed out on the Inaugural Trophy last week after a countback so it was nice to see him declared the winner on this occasion. Dave played flawless golf for the first eight holes with 7 pars and a birdie on the 3rd hole. A seven on the 9th hole set him back a bit but a steady back nine saw Dave return a nett 65. It started a good weekend for Dave as he saw his beloved football team Manchester City retain the Premier League title on Sunday. Gareth Eaton returned to a bit of form and was next on nett 67 followed by in form Martin Major also on nett 67. The 10 minute tee-time intervals and having a starter on the first tee also seemed to be met with positive responses and if you have any feedback on competitions then please let us know in the shop. This week it’s a bit more relaxed after the board competitions and we play the Sunningdale Foursomes starting at 12:04pm this Saturday.

Ladies golf... The Clare Cup is still generously supported by lady member Jeanann Clare and we thank her for that. Unfortunately the weather was certainly against our ladies as they played on a cold Sunday and then the rest competed on a wet Thursday morning. All 23 ladies that completed their rounds deserve praise as the weather was so atrocious. The winner was Alaine Britton with a gritty round of nett 71. It was a deserved victory for Alaine who came third in the recent ladies Barnes Trophy and she has been knocking on the door for a while.
Sandra Peake has also been playing consistently good golf but she had to settle for second place on this occasion with a nett 73, she did have the consolation of scoring the only two on the 16th hole. Third place went to Julie Daines with nett 76. The first Monday evening ladies Stableford of the season was won by Lady Captain Chris Paxton. Chris scored 17 points and only failed to score on the third hole. Elspeth Forbes chased Chris all the way with 16 points and Elspeth actually didn’t score on two holes. The next ladies competition is a 18 hole summer Stableford on Sunday and next Thursday.

Seniors section It’s just like waiting for buses with Peter Hargreaves, after last week’s 18 hole success he clearly has a liking for winning and he took the second round of the seniors summer league this Tuesday. Peter’s latest good round was a 20 point score but he was only just ahead of Brian Whitworth who also scored 20 points but lost out on a card play-off. Alan Nevin completed the top three with 19 points. In the team match last week our seniors played against our sister club and local rivals Pryors Hayes, it’s always a close contest for bragging rights and on this occasion it was just the same as the overall score was 4-4. The return leg is at Pryors Hayes in September.

USPGA preview… It’s the second major of the season as the world’s best players descend on the Bethpage Black course to play for the famous Wannamaker Trophy. We were lucky enough to meet with David Abeles - the CEO of TaylorMade golf company last week and he knows the course very well, he was asked for his tips for the USPGA and in his words it’s a ‘bombers course’ and he seriously fancied Rory Mcilroy’s chances. Here are our 5 picks for players to watch: 1. Rory Mcilroy 10/1 2. Brooks Koepka 9/1 3. Adam Scott 40/1 4. Tony Finau 30/1 5. Gary Woodland 55/1 We reckon all of these could be worth at least an each-way bet, who do you think will win? Let us know here.

Hottest summer looks… The summer feels like it has arrived with the weather this week but also with the new clothing that has turned up in the shop. You will see a lot more bright colours on display and plenty of shorts and shirts. Here are some of the most eye-catching new arrivals from Under Armour, FootJoy, Galvin Green and adidas….. |
- This FootJoy aqua polo shirt is classic in looks but with nice grey stripe detail on the collar, the citrus version of this shirt also looks very sharp and they both will look great paired with the light FootJoy white performance shorts.
- The latest Galvin Green colour story is a bold shade called bluebird which looks very strong when paired with black or white bottoms.
- Under Armour have also gone brighter with this nice shade of pink which is like a coral, there is lovely detail on the sleeves of this shirt and it looks really good with these navy Under Armour shorts.
- adidas are also going for a mainly coral and navy colour story, they do some really nice chest strip shirts just like this one.
This is just a small selection of our latest clothing collections and if you watch the golf on TV this week you should see a lot of the top players wearing these styles and colours, call in soon to have a proper look at our new arrivals. |

Photo of the week... A bit of fun this week with our Photo of the Week, there has been lots of work on clubhouse renovations over the winter and one of the new features is this stunning 100 year old Olive tree that we’ve had planted, if you look closely though can you see the angry face?! A lot of our golfers probably look like this when they come off the golf course!

Sergio Garcia's career to date has been nothing short of phenomenal. The Spaniard is a 10-time winner on the PGA Tour and a 15-time winner on the European Tour, he donned a Green Jacket in 2017 after picking up his maiden Major triumph at the Masters, and he is now Europe's all-time record point scorer in Ryder Cup history. |
The 1 constant throughout Some of you may recognise the above image of Sergio, as he recreates one of his most famous moments from Medinah in 1999. Ever since he turned professional, Garcia has trusted adidas Golf on his journey to golfing greatness - a brand that you'll also find in your very own pro shop.
