Competition news

Hannah disrupts play…

The Inaugural Trophy is always our first major of the season and on Saturday we were all set for a great competition. With 50 members signed up to play, what we weren't prepared for was 43mm of rain in 24 hours and gale force winds in the form of Storm Hannah. It was just our bad luck that the weather was at it's worst just as the competition was due to start. We took the difficult decision to postpone the competition and it's the first time we have had to do it in 18 years!

So now the Inaugural Trophy will be played on Bank Holiday Monday 6th May at 11am. The entry sheet is up on the notice board and it's good to see that it is nearly full again already, Saturday's bad weather was surely just a blip and let's hope there are no more storms for a good while!

This Saturday we play the May Medal with a 12:04pm start time. The competition is supported by adidas Golf and there is the bonus that the winner will receive a pair of the latest Adidas golf shoes in their size.

Also good luck to Eddy Williams and Julie Daines who are off today to represent us at the National Sixes final at the Centurion Club!

Knockout trophies…

Despite the lack of golf on the course, on Saturday we still had nearly 40 members here in the clubhouse to watch the knockout draws unfold. We have had a record number of entries this season for the pairs and the singles, with 48 golfers entered in the singles and 68 in the pairs. Thanks to Ian and Julie Daines for organising the draws and making sure they ran smoothly.

There should be some great first round and preliminary round matches and you can view both draws on our website by clicking here.

Please remember that the first matches should be played by Sunday 26th May - there will be no extensions, and if you are the player listed on top in your match then it is your responsibility to contact your opponent to arrange a match date. Contact numbers are available in the Pro-Shop.

Titleist Ball Fitting Afternoon

We have are lucky enough to be having THE golf ball expert Joe Smith visiting us on Thursday 23rd May from 1-7pm to share his golf ball knowledge with all of you. He will be on hand to carry out FREE golf ball fittings for anyone that books a slot.

Most of you will know the benefit of playing the right golf clubs but your golf ball is the one piece of equipment that you use for every shot and yet it's importance is often over looked. It's likely that most of you have never had a ball fitting before and you may not realise the differences between models and how much playing the right ball can really help your game.

There is nothing about golf balls that Joe doesn't know and he will be happy to impart some of his knowledge on you and give you plenty of guidance about the right Titleist ball for your game. Our shoe trade in deal has now finished but next week signals the start of one of our best in store promotions - the return of the Complete Equipment Solution (CES) is this Monday.

Summer clothing spotlight…

Despite the efforts of Storm Hannah, summer is pretty much here and the weather is set fair heading into this weekend, now is the time that you can think about upgrading your wardrobe with some new colours and styles. Below are some of the latest looks and technology we have in store from adidas, Galvin Green, FootJoy, Under Armour and popular new ladies brand Swing Out Sister.

Galvin Green have gone for eye-catching yellow and gold shades that go perfectly with navy bottoms. Don’t forget the Lincoln jacket - it’s the best all round jacket on the market and we have trial tops so you can try for yourself.

adidas are brightening things up with their coral and navy colours. Under Armour have a mint collection which is ideal with black trousers or shorts, plus the new May drop is due any day now.

FootJoy have an array of colour stories, this new small FJ logo print shirt is proving very popular and it also looks great in white.

Swing Out Sister have some great styles and at really good price points so it’s no surprise the collection is proving a hit with our lady members.

Needless to say we have caps and shoes that compliment these outfits and would finish off the look perfectly! The month of May will see lots more arrivals so please call in to have a look around

Ladies news

Beware the injured golfer…

It's been a bit quieter this week at the club as 12 of our lady members are on a golf trip to Portugal, the ladies that were here did take part in an 18 hole Stableford. The best score was a brilliant 45 point round from Alanna Grogan, Alanna is only just back playing again after a broken leg and she showed no signs of the injury affecting her golf. Even though Alanna started with a limp and only had 3 points after three holes, she soon found her stride. A score of 21 points on the front nine was good but another 24 on the back nine was even better with five pars helping her to her winning total.

Even with a full field, Alanna's 45 point score would likely have been good enough to win, and her handicap has fallen from 25 to 21. Gemma Davies showed that her lesson with Adrian worked well as she scored 39 points in second place and she also saw a good handicap reduction after a solid round that included 6 pars. Keira Wharton signed off before her trip to Thailand with a third place 35 point score.

This Sunday and Thursday the ladies play for the Clare Cup.

Seniors section

Hot scoring in a bumper field…

There was also some good scoring with the seniors in their latest 9 hole Stableford. The weather was glorious last Tuesday and there was another bumper turnout of 38 players and the golf was hot too as Richard Buchanan took the honours with a 25 point haul.

It was Richard's first seniors victory and he did it in style scoring at least two points on every hole and two pars on holes four and six yielded 8 points. After this brilliant round Richard sees his handicap fall by four shots to 33.

Second place went to Bob Galley on 21 points, the highlight of Bob's round was a birdie 3 on the sixth hole, Mike Eddison was third on 20 points. All the top ten players beat their handicaps so 18 points was only good enough for eleventh place!

Next week we'll bring you news of this week’s seniors 18 hole Stableford, we're sure there will be lots more big scores.

The European Tour make some great videos and here is another great watch. How many shots would it take a professional golfer to hit a hole in one? Well Andy Sullivan was given 500 balls to hit to see if he could achieve this feat. Let’s just hope they repaired all the pitch marks properly!!
