Spring Stableford Review On Saturday we played our Spring Stableford and the weather was certainly spring-like with a mixture of sunshine and cold breezy spells. Lots of members are still adjusting to the longer course off the back tees and there was only one player that beat their handicap, and it was none other than our new Captain Alan Tayler. Alan's extra responsibilities are certainly not harming his golf as just like Chris did last week with the ladies, already Alan has won a competition as Captain. The front nine went particularly well for our new Captain and a run of three pars on 7, 8 and 9 gave him 22 points. The back nine wasn't quite as straight forward and there was a no score on the 10th hole but the last hole yielded another par for Alan to give him an excellent 38 point total.

The next best score was 36 points from Stuart Gray including a birdie on the 13th hole, the top three was completed by Javier Lang - he fired three birdies in his 35 point round. The next competition is a Bank Holiday Stableford this Easter Monday at 12:04pm. Please remember that entries for the pairs and singles knockouts need to be in along with your entry fee of £10 and £5 by 28th April as the draw will be done after the Inaugural Trophy. Also you will notice that entry sheets for the May competitions onwards will have groups going out in fourballs rather than threeballs - this has been done as competition numbers are increasing and we want as many members as possible to be able to compete.
Thursday evening golf and food.... As a way of encouraging new members we will be holding a regular Thursday evening roll up all the way through the summer starting at 6pm. If you have been inspired by the golf on TV and you fancy becoming more serious about the game then our golf games on a Thursday could be just for you. You can play 9 holes with a current club member and other potential new members and get an introduction to what we're all about, there is food in the clubhouse afterwards and it will cost visitors just £10 for the golf and food. The tees will be booked for 6pm every Thursday and if you fancy playing or know anyone that may want to then please let them know, members, friends of members and any aspiring golfers are more than welcome to join in.

Par 3 Challenge round up We had a great day last Friday for our Masters inspired par 3 challenge. Over 100 golfers entered from youngsters through to professionals and they all got to play our course as never before with nine specially set up par 3 holes with unique tee positions and tricky pin placements. |
The best score was from Gary Grogan with an amazing 26 point score, maybe Gary is some kind of par 3 specialist as nobody else could get near his winning score and he won a nice Titleist cart bag! Runner up was Gemma Davies with 23 points, Gemma blobbed the 3rd but was in the zone for her last six holes scoring 19 points and she left a 5 point birdie putt on the last hole just short.
The best non-handicap score came from Peter Giles with a gross score of 37 and Adam Powell was the best professional with a one under par score of 26 in which he gave a short game masterclass with some sublime up and downs. Well done also to Ethan Jackson who scored 25 points to be the best junior, young Harry Mitchell is one to look out for too - he scored 6 points on one hole!! The challenge was so popular that we will make sure it becomes an annual event during the Masters week and thank you to everyone that participated.

Meet the member..... This week we have a very interesting profile on last year’s Captain and one of our favourite wrong way round golfers Dave Shering…. How long have you been a member at Hartford? I've been a member since 2002, but I've been a golfer since the late 1990s when I played at Newbury in Berkshire. What is your current handicap? Handicap is 12.8 What is your favourite course that you have played? I've played some great courses but I never get tired of going back to Siloth-on-Solway on the North-East coast, it's in the middle of nowhere but a beautiful course with stunning views and depending on the wind you get one easy nine with the wind and the other nine into the wind feels like you'll never finish it!
|
|
Favourite and least favourite holes at Hartford? The 7th is my favourite - especially around May or June time when the sun is out and the flowers are in full bloom, the view from the top is spectacular. The 9th hole is my least favourite as it is one of the hardest holes I have played anywhere, so much trouble everywhere which is probably why we made so much money for charity last year with the £1 donations for shots in the water! Who would join you in your dream fourball? Well a few people have said John Daly but I have actually already played 6 holes with him at Camberley Heath in a corporate golf day, he was a thoroughly nice bloke and very helpful. I would therefore choose Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods - the reasons are obvious as they are probably the best three golfers that have ever lived. I learnt to swing copying right-handers in the mirror so I would love to see these three up close and try to emulate them.

If you could play any course in the world where would it be? It's an obvious answer but it would be Augusta, especially having just watched The Masters golf on TV at the weekend. The place looks simply amazing and in perfect condition, it doesn't even look real on TV - it would be a dream come true to go there! And finally, what was your chosen Captain's charity last year? We raised money for Breast Cancer Awareness and I'm extremely pleased to say that we collected over £1300 in donations, a huge thank you to all the members that contributed over the 12 months of my Captaincy.

Masters Review It was a treat for all sports fans, never mind just golf fans, to watch the great Tiger Woods complete a remarkable comeback and claim a 15th Major on Sunday afternoon at Augusta. |
Woods said his greatest motivation was to win a Major in front of his children as last time he had won they weren't even born and it will go down as one of the all-time great sporting moments when we watched him triumphantly walk off the 18th green to give his son a huge hug. Love him or hate him, a lot of people talk about and watch golf because of Tiger Woods and that has to be good for the game. Hopefully his return to the top can inspire a whole new generation of youngsters to get into this wonderful sport and long may his golfing success continue. Here is a list of our Masters sweep winners, all accounts have been credited with winnings and it's not long now until the second major of the season (USPGA Championship) in May.... • Winner: Adam Powell £80 • Runner up: Gareth Eaton £30 • Last player: Chris Bird £25 • Low score: James Eaton £25 • Top Brit: Alan Taylor £10 • Top American: Dave Ingman £10 • Top European: Kieran Underwood £10

Our latest collection of clothing has been sitting in-store for a few weeks now and, in our opinion, there's never been a better selection. From loud to safe colours, regular to athletic fit, and bold to classic designs, we really do have something for everyone this spring. |
| Glenmuir Haddington polo |
| Available with our club's crest
|
|
Some of our favourite pieces have to be these club-crested beauties from Glenmuir, who pride themselves on their craftsmanship having supplied the European Ryder Cup team on numerous occassions in the past. This stylish Haddington polo is one the best picks, with three great-looking colour options allowing you to stand out on the course for all the right reasons. Its subtle hexagonal print on the chest adds a little bit of flare to a classic two-colour design, and we think you'll love its four-way stretch fabric that offers such enjoyable comfort. We have a host of club-crested product available in-store, which make for the perfect present for a loved one (or yourself) so be sure to pop in next time you're down the club. |
