February Medal review The weather was perfect on Saturday, the course was playing well and it's been a winter of unbelievable scoring here at Hartford so it wasn't really even a surprise when Eddy Williams returned a 48 point score. We all assumed that would be the winning total and Eddy would achieve a maiden victory, what we weren't expecting was for him to come second by 5 points! Brian Wager is lightly golfed in terms of competitions but he put his name on the map on Saturday with a stupendous score of 53 points. We can remember Julie Daines scoring 52, also in February - 2017 when she won by 12 points, but as far as we know 53 points is the best score we've had in an any individual competition since the club was founded in 2001. Brian was playing off a 20 handicap and he started off routinely enough on the first two holes with a 7, 4 start before he began to play like a Tour pro! A par on the third with two shots is always nice before he had a birdie two on the fifth for another 4 pointer and in an incredible run of fifteen holes. Brian didn't miss a shot and had just 1 bogey, 1 birdie and 13 pars - golf a scratch player would be happy with! Just to show he's human he had a bogey on the last but Brian signed for nines of 27 and 26 points for a record total and plenty of barracking in the bar ensued!! As it was a score out of the ordinary, Brian has lost just three shots off his handicap to drop to 17. Eddy was incredibly unlucky to have his best round yet at Hartford but only take runners-up spot. Eddy has new custom fitted irons and they helped him to a 5 point hole on the twelfth and it is mind boggling to think that the pair scored over 100 Stableford points between them. Paul Lang's 43 points in third place looked pretty ordinary in that company! Click here to see the amazing scores. |
