Winter League Round up So we have now played the 8 qualifying rounds of our Winter League and we have been very lucky with the weather, having said that - Sunday's last round was probably played in the toughest conditions yet as a cold and strong 25mph wind battered our competitors making the course play it's full length and more in places! For example the average score on the 9th hole was 5.64 and the normally gentle opening first hole played an average score of 6.44 so the course really bared it's teeth. Considering the conditions, the winning score of 25 points from youngsters Joel Cann and Ben Barrow could probably be described as the best round of the league so far, the next best score on the day was 22 points showing that these two were in a league of their own in the last round. Joel and Ben started off well with three pars before Joel scored a birdie three on the 4th and then scored an eagle two on the 6th hole to really get their round going. Their only blemish was when they both bogeyed the 7th hole but this was soon put right by another birdie, this time from Ben on the 8th hole. Amazingly Ben also had one of only two pars scored by the whole field on the treacherous 9th hole!! Second place on the day went to Alaine and Dave Britton with 22 points, the best score of their campaign. In the end, 112 points was just good enough to get in the crucial final top 8, but only 1 pair made it on this total - Dave Shering and Paul Foster, it was hard lines for another 4 pairs that also had a 112 total but not as high a single round - a cruel way to go out after 8 qualifying rounds. The quarter-final matches are: Martin Major & Andie Fraser vs. Dave Shering & Paul Foster Paddy Scanlan & Chris Bird vs. Alan Tayler & Alan Royle Pete Kinsey & Jay Moran vs. Paul Cunningham & Eddy Williams Ben Barrow & Joel Cann vs. Paul & Kieran Underwood The matches will be played over 18 holes on Saturday 9th February, before then we play the February Medal this Saturday with an 11am start time for both.
