Competition news

Winter League

Amazingly we have already played four rounds of our Winter League and things are starting to take shape. The course was again in great condition on Sunday and some tricky pin positions didn't seem to do much to slow the scoring as there was another bumper winning total.

This time it was the turn of Chris Bird and Paddy Scanlan to hit top gear as they blitzed around the course in a better ball score of two under par gross for a 27 point total. The downwind first yielded a birdie for Paddy and he could do no wrong on the first few holes as he contributed another birdie two on the fifth hole, in fact Paddy only dropped one shot to the course and on that hole Chris did his bit and scored a steady par for the team to keep a bogey off their scorecard.

Captain Dave Shering and Paul Foster remembered to pay their competition fee this week and they'll be glad they did as they had a good game in scoring 26 points in second place, they had a birdie on the fourth hole and were just one over par better ball. The ever consistent pair of Martin Major and Andie Fraser consolidated their lofty position in the overall standings with a solid 25 point score which included one birdie and just one bogey.

2. Peter Kinsey & Jay Moran = 97 points
3. Ben Barrow & Joel Cann = 91 points
4. Kieran & Paul Underwood = 91 points
5. Ken Powell & Pete Wildin = 88 points
6. Antony Green & Dave Johnson = 83 points
7. Gareth Eaton & Liam Tyrer = 82 points
8. Dave & Alaine Britton = 80 points

The fifth round is on Saturday 8th December, when things will surely change as pairs battle to make the top eight!

Midweek Stableford round-up

There was a decent turn out for our Midweek Stableford last Wednesday, Alan Tayler was the first person out on the course at 8:20am but he had a bit of a shock when he opened his car boot and found that his trusty driver shaft had unfortunately broken in two. After a quick visit to the shop we lent him a second hand Titleist driver and we must know what we're doing as he won the competition with the borrowed club that he had never used before!!

Alan scored 43 points including a birdie two on the fifth hole, and on the back nine he had a very impressive total of five pars with a score of 22 points. Alan sees his handicap drop from 19 to 18 and he made it a double as he also won the October Midweek Stableford.

It's not the first time that Alan has pipped Kieran Underwood in a Midweek competition as Kieran scored 41 points in second place. 4 handicapper Kieran's first 14 holes were flawless as he had two birdies and twelve pars, just two bogeys on 15 and 16 scuppered his chances of winning but it was still a great round. Alan Phillips completed the top three with 39 points.

Rules Quiz night

We have a sociable night coming up on Friday but you can also learn something as we are holding a rules quiz starting at 7:30pm.

The entry sheet is filling up nicely and the plan is to come up with teams of three to answer 40 rules questions set by the fiendish quiz master Ian Daines. The questions will be based on some current rules and a few new ones that will be introduced in 2019 and it's the ideal chance for you to all brush up on your knowledge.

Photo of the week

Our ladies section held a 9 hole Stableford last Thursday and the day revolved around raising money for Children in Need, the competition was a three clubs plus a putter format and there were some good scores. As you can see from the photographs the ladies made a good effort with their outfits inspired by Children in Need.

Sandra Peake is a prolific golfer but interestingly she hadn’t won for a while... she put that right on Thursday with a great total of 17 points using just four clubs. Kath Hough came second with 16 points but not scoring on the last hole meant she couldn’t pip Sandra. A special mention also to the ever-young Pam Mainwaring who scored a wonderful birdie two on the second hole.

After the golf came a charity raffle and the ladies section raised a total of £159 to donate to Children in Need, a great effort...well done to all the ladies involved.

New balls, please

Sometimes we can overlook the small details. Take your golf ball for example; you might be getting by on picking any old ball from your bag, but have you ever wondered just how much of a difference a brand new golf ball will make to your overall performance?

Believe it or not...

Tour professionals change their ball every three to four holes - some even after every hole - so why would you want to use a golf ball that you found on the course sometime last year, that has been from tree to tree with the scuff marks and discolouration to prove it?

Here's the answer...
