Captain’s Trophy review The Captain’s Trophy was a slightly different format this year as it didn’t take place on Captain’s Day as it has done in the past, it was still a Stableford competition as usual and the course was again set up in fantastic condition, thanks to Course Manager Dave Jones and the hard-working greenkeeping team. There was a full entry sheet of members playing and scoring was again good, long-time leader in the clubhouse was Captain Dave Shering on 39 points until Andy Goolding came in with a slight grin on his face as he had scored 43 points! Playing off 18, Andy’s round was extremely consistent with a total of 10 pars on his scorecard and he had a great front nine with 23 points at the halfway stage. Andie Fraser continued his good run of form in scoring 40 points but the closest challenger to Andy Goolding’s lead came from the last group. Dave Jones obviously found the course set up to his liking as he played a brilliant round of golf to score a one under par 68 gross to also give him 43 points. Big hitting Dave had a total of 5 birdies in his exceptional round and his only real blemish was a costly double bogey on the 14th hole. As there was a tie on 43 points, it went down to a card play-off and it was Andy that prevailed courtesy of a better last 6 holes. A good day for the pair as Dave won longest drive whilst Andy also won nearest the pin. Congratulations to Andy Goolding on his first board competition victory at Hartford and he joins an illustrious list of names! Andy’s handicap has fallen from 18 to 15 and he also qualifies for the Hartford Masters, there is just one more spot left for the Masters and it will go to the highest non-qualifier from next week’s September Medal so there’s still lots to play for! This Monday we play a Bank Holiday Stableford starting at 12:04pm.

Midweek Medal round up It was also a close fought affair in last Wednesday’s Midweek Medal with Alan Tayler taking the spoils after a fine nett 65. Alan was flying and he had two birdie twos on the 2nd and 11th hole, he stumbled a bit on the last two holes with double bogeys but in the end he held on to first place just beating Kieran Underwood who also scored nett 65 after another card play-off. Five handicapper Kieran had a very steady round of one over par gross 70 that included four birdies, but Alan just pipped him in the end. Well done to Julie Daines on a brilliant eagle two on the 6th hole after her tee-shot finished about 4 feet from the hole, her first ever eagle – husband Ian is still waiting for his first!

- 2nd - Paul Cunningham = 33 points
- 3rd - Sarah Walker = 25 points
- 4th - Steve Hulse = 23 points
- 5th - Alan Tayler = 23 points
The last Midweek Medal of the summer is on Wednesday 12th September.

Ladies news The ladies had a lovely day on Thursday for Kath’s Kup Stableford (which is named after former Captain Kath Hough) and there was a great turnout of 28 ladies playing with a number showing some strong form so we expected some good scores, however we didn’t quite expect the winning score to be as much as 47 points!! Audrey Kettle’s name already appears on the ladies honours boards but it’s fair to say that she had the round of her life on Thursday as she blitzed around the course - playing off a 30 handicap Audrey had seven pars including a golden run on the back nine of four in a row which gave her an incredible total of 25 points on the back nine! Inevitably Audrey’s handicap has fallen a fair amount from 30 to 26, well done. Julie Daines continued a good season by scoring 39 points in second place, it’s not often you score such a good total and still finish 8 points behind the winner! The highlight of Julie’s round was a birdie on the 6th hole, a hole she clearly enjoys at the moment after her eagle on it the previous day. In third place was Sarah Dee on 38 points.

Seniors section Last Tuesday the seniors morning event involved 13 players playing a 9 hole Stableford, top three were Roger Wilkinson on 19 points, Tony Ledson on 20 points only to be beaten on countback by Alan Tayler also on 20 points. Another good day at the office for Alan who also scored a two. A total of 26 more senior members went on an away trip to nearby High Legh Golf Club in Knutsford for an 18 hole Stableford, this game also featured an imaginative "Longest Putt". Someone did ask whether the ball had to go in the hole! The two nearest the pins awards went to Andy Margeson and Rhett Butler, while Steve Denne achieved the longest putt. Unfortunately nobody actually measured it but the result stands. Steve also came in third with 36 points beaten by Jack Thompson on 38. The winner with a magnificent 39, 24 of which were on the back 9, was Bob Bowen, well done Bob, a great score around an unfamiliar course.

Titleist TS drivers Last Thursday we were lucky enough to get a sneak peek of and try a new driver model that isn’t out on the market yet. There has been a lot of buzz on Tour about the new Titleist TS drivers and we couldn’t wait to try them to see what all the hype is about. After a brief talk about new technology in the soon to be released TS drivers from Frazer who works for Titleist, he then fitted Adam & Adrian into one of the new drivers and the results were fantastic. Compared to their current drivers they both picked up plenty of ball speed and in terms of distance they added a combined 30 extra yards on to their drives, considering they both already use recently custom fitted driver, this was a massive increase!
