Hartford Stag Trophy Review We played another board competition on Saturday and the Stag Trophy is the only one we play with two divisions split by handicaps to give two winners. The course was again set up in first class condition, a few much needed showers had softened the fairways up a little but some tricky pin positions challenged our competitors and the scoring wasn’t particularly low. The winning score of nett 67 came from our Lady Captain Sue Gunning who won Division two and her first main club board competition. Sue’s round was set up by a brilliant start in which she was just 3 over par after her first six holes and on the back nine she scored two crucial par threes on holes 14 and 16 after finding the heart of the green with her tee shots. It was hard lines on Justin Hyam who had been leading in the clubhouse with his nett 67 but just got edged out by Sue after a card play-off, it would have also been Justin’s first board victory and he really couldn’t have come any closer. The main consolation for Justin is that he qualifies alongside Sue for the end of season Hartford Masters and Sue has seen her handicap drop to 22 after her latest good round. In Division one it was also a close affair as there was a four-way tie on nett 68, in the end it was James Eaton that prevailed to claim his first victory of the season. A brilliant birdie on seventeen was a pivotal moment for James as it allowed him to win the card play-off, in form Steve Hulse was second with a round that included a very impressive birdie three on the difficult 10th hole. Youngsters Javier Lang and Joel Cann were the other two players to also score a nett 68. This Sunday we play a three man Texas Scramble starting at 12:04pm.
