Club Championship There was another Club Championship to be played for last Tuesday as the Seniors played for their Club Championship Trophy, there was a good turnout of competitors and the weather was again warm and sunny with the ball was running well on the baked fairways. The winning score was a 43 point total from Andy Goolding who gets his name on the seniors honours boards for the second time with this latest victory. Andy got his round off to the perfect start with a birdie on the first and he only really struggled on the 2nd and 3rd holes, once they were out of the way he made hay as the sun shone with an outward nine of 20 points before a brilliant back nine of five pars and four bogeys to give him another 23 points. The nearest challenger to Andy was Bob Griffiths who had back to back birdies in his 41 point score, third place went to John Gunning also on 41 points. It was good to see a total of 44 seniors playing on the day and the standard of golf that is being played gets better every week!

Captain's Charity Day Captains Dave Shering and Sue Gunning did an excellent job of organising a very successful Captain's Charity Day on Saturday and a big thank you to everyone that took part and donated to Breast Cancer Research and the Salvation Army. There were a number of prizes up for grabs and the quality of golf was fantastic with some extremely high team scores, the top 3 teams were: 1. William Bebbington, Sarah Dee, Dean Larkin and Jeanann Clare = 97 points 2. Justin Hyam, Simon Stephenson, Alan Royle and Stuart Gray = 96 points 3. Andy Goolding, Sandra Peake, Chris Paxton and Paul Rotherham = 95 points |
Well done to all the winners and special thanks to Rhys Nevin, Pauline Nevin and Tom Duncalf for spending time on the 7th manning the drinks station and organising the beat the pro challenge. Most importantly a total of over £1300 was raised on the day for the two chosen charities - a great effort by our members and much appreciated by Sue and Dave. This Saturday we get back to serious business with another board competition as we play for the Hartford Stag Trophy, this competition is split into 2 handicap divisions so there is an even better chance of winning! It starts at 11am on Saturday.
Midweek Medal Conditions were still hard and bouncy for the Midweek Medal last Wednesday and there were only two players that managed to break par showing how tricky course conditions were. One player that didn't seem to struggle at all was Sarah Walker who scored a brilliant nett 64, Sarah has finished in runners up spot in no fewer than three Midweek Medals this year so she definitely deserved to finally get a win! Sarah's round consisted of a great run of three pars in a row on the back nine and after this latest good round her handicap has fallen from 22 to 19, well done Sarah! The next best score was a nett 68 from Dave Britton who also has a habit of being a runner up as he came second last month too, in third place was Dave Jones with a nett 69.

Tips to help your game With the hot dry weather we've had this Summer, the golf course is playing pretty much like never before, with the baked fairways the ball is running for miles which is not always a good thing as sometimes it can run into trouble, judging by the amount of golf balls we are selling in the shop at the moment a lot of you may be struggling with this problem! On many holes it might be a good idea to not use your driver but instead try a low running iron shot, known as the Tiger stinger you will see this shot, a lot at this week's Open Championship. This is a low shot that will run well to give you distance but also help you keep the ball on the short stuff. Here are 3 keys to hitting a good low running shot from our professional Adam Powell: 1. Set up - weight position will shift slightly so try 60/40 on your left side and put ball position slightly back of centre (yellow ball in photo) also notice that the hands stay where they are so they are still forward of the ball, it is only the ball position you need to move back. 2. The swing - try a slightly more compact 3/4 length back swing to help you keep control as accuracy is key with this shot and also try a shorter more curtailed follow through. 3. Tempo - don't try to hit the ball harder, if you hit the ball harder it will only increase spin and launch the ball higher so just focus on a nice smooth tempo and hit through the ball to give you a low flight and ensure the ball runs out well.

So maybe next time leave the driver in the bag more often and try the low running iron or hybrid shot and let us know how you get on and if it improves your scores!

New ball in town When golf ball company Titleist brought the Pro V1 range of balls onto the market in 1999, it really was a revolutionary moment and it is a ball family that has dominated golf for the last 20 years with many professionals and amateurs trusting their games to the ProV1 ball. There have been many versions of the Pro V1 ball over the years but now is the first time that there has been an addition to the range with the new AVX ball, the A actually stands for Alternative VX ball and we believe that it is a ball that will definitely suit many amateur golfers.

Many players believe that they aren't good enough to use a ProV1 ball but the truth is that it is the best ball in the range, the only difference now is that with the AVX ball Titleist spotted a gap in the market and it will suit a broader range of players including those with slightly slower swing speeds. The dimples on the AVX ball are noticeably different to the standard ProV1 and it encourages lower spin which is the key to long and straight tee shots. The ball flight with the AVX ball is definitely slightly lower and despite the lower flight and spin it still feels remarkably soft and stops quickly on the green with approach shots. The AVX is also available in yellow which has never been an option with the Pro V1 ball and it really is a ball that will suit a lot of club golfers and if you don't quite generate the speed to get the most out of the Pro V1 ball then the AVX is the ball for you. Try a sleeve now and let us know how you get on, we're sure that you will be impressed!

If you haven’t used a push trolley for a while then it’s definitely worth trying one in the not too distant future. In years gone by they were made of metal and were heavy to use, but that couldn’t be further from the truth with today’s lightweight options. |
Nice and easy This BIG MAX IQ+ 360 push trolley is a great option and tips the scales at just 6.3kg, which makes it easy to push so you remain full of energy to the last hole. As well as its lightweight frame, it boasts a 360-degree front wheel so you can steer it to any spot effortlessly (watch our video to see for yourself), plus a handbrake and a spacious console that has room for all of your valuables and accessories. This is just one of the trolley options we offer, so if you’re looking for something with more features or that folds smaller, why not pop by the store and check out our whole range? |
