Benny Trophy We played another board competition on Saturday and the fast greens, hard bouncy fairways and gusting winds tested our members to their limits. One player who didn't seem to struggle was Liam Tyrer who won his sixth board competition at Hartford and his first since 2015. Liam hasn't played much golf after a wrist injury so this was a welcome return to form for him in only his third competitive round of the season. Liam had two brilliant birdies when he hit the 6th green in one with a 4 iron tee shot both times around, and he could do little wrong on the front nine in which he was 5 up! With just three holes to go, Liam had reached the score of 7 up, despite his first losses of the day on holes 16 and 17 it didn't make much difference as Liam still won by the not so small margin of three holes. Well played Liam - a great round of golf! There was a three way tie on the score of 2 up but Steve Hulse took second place on the countback and Order of Merit leader Ian Daines extended his lead with another high finish in third place. This Saturday we play another board competition as we play the Scratch Trophy sponsored by Birdie Consulting, it starts at 11am.

Seniors vs. Ladies Trophy Match It was a beautiful morning last Tuesday for the annual Seniors against ladies section match, and as usual the teams seemed to be very well matched, it's lucky that there were 9 matches as after the first 8 the seniors had won two, the ladies had won two and the other four were all halved. So it came down to the last match and it even went down to the last hole as the seniors pair won the final match to clinch an extremely close match 3-2. No photographs unfortunately as all the competitors got too carried away with the after match celebrations to remember to take any so we've found one from last year! This week the seniors are away on the Captain's Away Day at Malkins Bank organised by Paul Frost, we'll bring you a full report next week and hopefully some photos too!

Midweek Medal The course was in fantastic condition last Wednesday for the Midweek Medal and it was a new member that took the honours with a fine nett 60 from Peter Kinsey. Peter missed most of last season with an injury but he showed he is getting back to fitness with a splendid round of golf, his front nine was particularly impressive with birdies on holes 4 and 6, the back nine wasn't quite as steady but Peter had so many shots to play with he still managed a nine under par 60 off his 21 handicap. Dave Britton had his best finish so far with a second place after a nett 64. Peter Kinsey capped off a good week by also winning on Sunday in our 9 hole Championship, he scored 21 points including a birdie on the fourth hole, Kieran Underwood was in second place with 19 points with a round that contained 3 birdies. Peter has surely made himself known to the Handicap Secretary with these first two performances and his handicap has already fallen from 21 to 18, keep it going Peter!

US Open review It was a case of the good, the bad and the ugly at last week's US Open, there can be no denying it made for an engrossing watch on TV but at times the course set up and almost impossible pin positions bordered on the ridiculous. After his third round, Zach Johnson was sitting in 17th place on 8 over par and he echoed the views of a lot of observers and players, 'Shinnecock Hills is beautiful, but unfortunately, they've lost the golf course'. We saw players putting off the green and struggling to find balls in the thick rough and although the US Open is supposed to offer the sternest test, the USGA seemed to realise they went a bit too far as the afternoon golfers came back to the field. Scores on the last day were much improved as the USGA took on board a great deal of justified criticism about how difficult the course became as it dried out in the afternoon. |
The ugly came from Phil Mickelson when in round three he decided to stop an over hit putt running off the green by knocking it back towards the hole whilst it was still moving knowing that a two shot penalty was the lesser of two evils. The controversial event summed up his frustration at the way the course was set up but it was blatant cheating from Mickelson and surely the USGA should have disqualified him as it certainly didn't fit in with the spirit of how the game should be played. The good came from Englishman Tommy Fleetwood who breezed round the course on the last day in 63 strokes, he had a nine foot birdie putt on the last hole to score the lowest ever round in US Open history but it just slid past the edge, in the end this one shot was just enough for him to miss out on a play off for first place with Brooks Koepka and the American became a back to back US Open champion. Next up is the Open Championship at Carnoustie which can also be a fearsome golf course especially if the weather turns for the worse but at least it will be a fair test for all the golfers rather than the car crash TV that was the US Open at timesecessary regelialia.

Video of the week As it was one of the most bizarre things we have ever seen on a golf course, our video of the week has to be Phil Mickelson on the 13th green in the third round of the US Open 'losing his mind' and hitting his moving ball back towards the hole. TV commentators were dumb founded at the time and even now it seems such a strange thing for him to have done and his credibility has surely been damaged - let's hope people don't copy him on the course. Watch a replay here and let us know your thoughts. |

Summer golf throws up different requirements and skill sets to that of winter golf, and you’ll often find yourself in positions or playing shots that you wouldn’t necessarily face at the other times of the year. The checklist below highlights the main performance differences you’ll notice between seasons, with an emphasis on distance in the winter and control in the summer. |
A great option all-year round These factors can make settling on one ball confusing, so here are our thoughts on why the TaylorMade Project (s) could be your perfect option. Not only does its large inner core deliver faster ball speeds for winter distance, but it also boasts a low compression that helps slower swinging players generate the high spin needed on firm summer greens. | |
