May Medal It was a warm sunny day on Saturday for our May Medal and the course was in fantastic condition with the greens rolling true and some tricky pin positions to test our golfers. Chris Whalley has been playing well recently and he was due a good round which came in the Medal as his golf was as hot as the weather! Chris scored an excellent five under par 64 including a brilliant birdie two on the fifth hole after he fired a tee shot to about 12 feet, other than a visit to the water on the 7th hole, Chris hardly put a foot wrong in his round and his reward for a four shot victory was a handicap cut from 13 to 12. Martin Major has been performing consistently and he finished in runners up spot for the second week running with a nett 68, Martin scored two 2s on holes 14 and 16 and his steady golf has seen him move to the top of the Summer Order of Merit. Chris Bird has also been playing well of late and he finished third with a level par nett 69. It would be remiss of us not to give Jonno Ness a mention for his remarkable 23 shots on the eight hole, we believe that this must be an unwanted record for most shots on a hole for the 2016 nett Club Champion, but he showed remarkable tenacity to finish the hole after 5 consecutive tee shots out of bounds followed by 8 swipes to remove himself from a greenside bunker!

Bank Holiday Stableford In the Bank Holiday Stableford on Monday it was 27.5 degrees out on the course and for some it was probably too hot as former Captain Ian Wharton won with 37 points, Ian didn’t score on the first hole so he recovered well to set up his winning total. At the top it was like a repeat of the Winter League Final as Ian finished above beaten finalists Beth and Mike Littler who scored 35 and 33 points respectively in second and third place. This Saturday we play a pairs competition – the Sunningdale Pairs with a 12:04pm start.

Team news The nine hole Cheshire League started for us last week with a home match against Cheadle and we started off with a 2.5 to 1.5 victory, the two winning pairs were Kieran Underwood & Marc Williams and Chris Whalley & Paul Cunningham. The next match is away at Hale next Tuesday and let’s hope we can go one better this year than our runners up finish in the league last season. Captain Dave Shering has had to move the location for his away weekend to the excellent Forest Pines Golf Club in Lincolnshire after a double booking at Forest of Arden, the dates are still the same – 4th/5th August and there is a sign-up sheet on the notice board.

Drive-in Lady Captain Sue Gunning hosted her re-arranged drive in on Monday with a nine hole Stableford, Sue drove off again in lovely sunny conditions in front of a large audience of ladies after the original competition in March was cancelled because of rain. The Stableford event was won by Sarah Dee who showed she is back to full fitness, after missing the winter season through injury, by scoring 19 points to finish on top. Sue Bradley also played well in scoring 19 points but she had to settle for second place after a countback, Collette Walling was third with 18 points. As the drive in was generously sponsored by Galvin Green Sarah has the pleasure of spending £100 in store on Ladies Galvin Green clothing.

Portugal trip Twelve of our intrepid ladies jetted off to Portugal for seven days for a four round golf trip, the weather was sunny but a little cool because of a chilly wind. Plenty of good golf was played as well as the odd glass of wine drunk, the courses played were Boavista, Espiche and Onyria Palmares and Jean Clare, Jean Jones and Wendy D’Arcy all featured on winning teams on a couple of occasions. |

Let’s face it: we all want to hit the ball further. Being able to hit longer drives gives you less club into the green, making everything that little bit easier. There are many ways you can try and generate more power during your swing, and nearly all of them start from the ground up. |
Trust your footwear Despite his small frame, tour star Rickie Fowler is renowned for his power. As you can see in the three images above, he pushes off from his right foot through impact and relies on great grip and stability to ensure the power his body is creating doesn’t come at the cost of control. Having a strong base is something we should all aspire for. The Under Armour Spieth 2 can help you do this thanks to its unique Rotational Resistance cleats that will give you traction in every direction across all terrains. |
