April Stableford After what feels like the longest winter ever, we finally had some good weather for the April Stableford as the course was bathed in glorious sunshine and what a difference it made as there was also some hot golf played! Kieran Underwood went out in the first group and he set the early pace with a solid score of 38 points in which he played some very consistent golf, each nine consisted of 1 birdie and just 3 bogeys and it's good to see Kieran continuing his form from a successful winter season and returning to a 5 handicap. Ian Daines and Chris Bird (who remembered to sign his card this week!) tried their best to overtake Kieran as they both returned scores of 37 points but in the end nobody could better Kieran and he held on for the victory. The next competition is our first 'Major' of the season and it takes place a week on Saturday, please note the earlier start tine for the Inaugural Trophy of 10am, you must also enter and pay for the singles and pairs knockout by this date.

Midweek Medal Steve Hulse is always capable of a low round and last Wednesday he went low as we played our first Midweek Medal of the season in which there was a decent turnout of 25 players. Steve's round started off well with an early birdie on the fourth hole and despite finding the water on the 5th hole he was playing steady golf, but Steve saved the real fireworks for the back nine, he birdied the 13th which started an incredible run of scores of 3,3,2,3,4 for holes 13-17, 3 under par. The highlight was definitely a long putt holed from 20 yards off the green on the 15th hole which dropped into the hole for an eagle two! Steve was on fire and he stood on the 18th tee at 2 under gross for his back nine and needing a par for a nett 60, after going left off the tee in the end he had to settle for a nice nett 62. Paul Underwood would have been very happy with his nett 63 also including a strong back nine, which most other weeks would have been a winning score, but not on this occasion as Steve took a worthy win with his 62.

Ladies Section The ladies played their first board competition of the season on Sunday afternoon and there was a good contingent of 7 day members competing, conditions were difficult with some tricky pin positions and a swirly wind blowing. In the end there was a first time winner as Jo Cameron scored a nett 71 which was set up by a great run of 3 pars from holes 14-16. Second placed Wendy D'Arcy has been working hard on her game recently and she could have had a great round on Sunday, she also scored a nett 71 but had started off with a 10 and finished with an 11, but in between she played some great golf including a birdie two on the 16th. Lady Captain Sue Gunning took third spot with a nett 72. |

Recent member matches Both our ladies and men’s pairs had great wins in the first round of the Daily Mail Foursomes Knockout, in the second round they both had tough away matches. Alan Taylor and Alan Royle were away at Frodsham against two low handicappers and they got off to a shaky start being 2 down after two but they dug in brilliantly and got back to all square after 9, the momentum was with them on the second nine and in the end they secured a brilliant two up victory to advance to the third round. Elspeth Forbes and Kath Hough faced a really difficult match at Sandiway but they put up a great fight, playing good golf, and in the end a putt on the 21st hole stopped just short of the hole to see them lose a hard fought match that finished in virtual darkness at nearly 8:30pm. In the nine hole league, there was a season opening Texas Scramble at Alderley Edge Golf Club, our four man team led by Captain Dave Shering was Alan Nevin, Alan Taylor and Ian Wharton and they played brilliantly to score a nett 24.5 and finish in top spot.

Titleist Driver review 23 handicapper Justin Hyam volunteered to trial and review the current Titleist 917 driver, he took it out for 9 holes and here are his thoughts: |
'I’ve been really looking forward to try the Titleist driver on the course and to do a head to head test with my current Callaway XR driver. Looks wise, I really liked it, the 917 looks a bit of a beast, all black/graphite grey finish, the club head looks big and ominous with a nice visible club face. On the course I used the driver 6 times and hit 5 fairways, distance wise it wasn't quite up with my current driver but that's maybe because it was a new club and as the 917 was just on the standard setting, I would surely benefit from a fitting session to find the best distance set up for me. The feel and looks are fantastic and my overall impression from a mid-high handicapper’s point of view is that it was very consistent and straight, feeling effortless. Most times I hit the Titleist driver it went straight or very close to straight, in time and maybe with a different set up, I’m sure I could learn how to hit it with more power to get similar results to my current driver and I definitely hit more fairways which is a good start. Overall I would say a good club maybe for the less consistent player and I would happily try it again.'

Video of the week Over the last few weeks, one of our teaching pro's, Jonny Pearce, has been working hard on some short instructional videos designed to help you with your golf in very easy to follow steps, he now has a YouTube channel called #GolfMadeSimple where you can watch all the videos so please subscribe as he is posting new videos all the time. Click here for the #GolfMadeSimple on YouTube. One shot we all seem to struggle with at this time of year is the chip shot from just off the green, the following video really breaks the chip shot down into simple terms with a few key pointers you can try. In JP's words ‘chipping is just like putting with a slight Italian “leaning tower of Pisa” set up which will create the best contact with the ball’. Click here to watch the video.

Consider a smart new look |
As it seems to do every year, the Masters has ignited the season and prompted many of you to dust off your clubs and take to the course. If this is you and you haven't been in the shop recently, make sure you come and take a look around as we have some fantastic new products sitting on the shelves, including our club crested range of apparel. This Glenmuir Hatfield polo is a great option as it combines a modern look with subtle detail to create a really stylish shirt. It's made from high-performance stretch fabric that is manufactured to work with your swing; a huge benefit of buying golf-specific clothing from us rather than a cheap polo from the high street. |
