Open Championship returns to the North-West
There is quite a buzz in the region as the Open Championship begins this week at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, it is definitely my favourite major of the year and it is always great to see the world's best players tackling a links golf course and battling the elements such as strong wind, deep bunkers and heavy rough. If the wind blows, and it usually does at Hoylake, it could suit players brought up on links golf such as Rory Mcilroy, Graeme McDowell and Padraig Harrington but if conditions are a little calmer and the sun shines this could play in to the hands of foreign golfers such as Adam Scott, Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson and I think young up and coming American Jordan Spieth could feature in the mix. As an outside bet I am going to back English golfer Tyrrell Hatton (250/1) for a top five finish, he has amassed over 200,000 euros in his rookie year on tour and finished very well last week at the Scottish Open at Royal Aberdeen showing he has the game to suit links golf.
Throughout the week of the Open championship we will be offering a 'FREE nine holes' - any visitor that pays for nine holes can do a second nine holes for FREE!
Tom Duncalf is Club Champion
It seems that every week we are telling you about the great golfing feats of our up and coming juniors and this week is no different! Our young Cheshire star Tom Duncalf who plays off a 3 handicap scored a brilliant level par round of 69 to take the Club Championship honours on Saturday, he had three birdies in his round and played the back nine in one under par to win the gross trophy by 6 shots from Gareth Eaton. Great play Tom and a worthy Club Champion, coincidentally it was Tom's older brother Jack that won last year so it's nice to see they are keeping it in the family!
In the nett section Julie Daines played very well to post a nett 64, this was the best score of the day but unfortunately for she wasn't eligible to win as there is a separate Ladies Club Championship, so the name on the honours board for best nett will be Paul Underwood as he shot the next best score of 65. Paul has been playing really well this season and has now dropped his handicap from 19 down to 15.
In a further plug for the success of our club fitting department we have helped all the above prize winners with their equipment and it shows how much having the right clubs really can help your game!
Here are some photographs from the Club Championship including some action shots of Tom (left) and Paul (right) on the 10th tee.
Four of our members are doing their bit for charity by embarking on a high altitude Alpine trek in aid of the charity Tiny Steps which is a new local charity, their aim is to provide a sensory and social cafe for children with additional needs and their families in the Northwich area. You won't see Martin Major, Gareth Eaton, Antony Green and Steve Nicholson on the golf course soon as they are setting off on 25th July to walk 85 miles across high alpine passes and cross twelve glaciers along the classic route from Chamonix to Zermatt with around 38,000 feet of ascent and descent - they are expecting the walk to last around 8 days.
The lads have left a sponsorship form in the shop so that you can sponsor them, it would be great if as many people as possible could help them raise money for this great local cause. You can also donate by clicking here: http://www.tiny-steps.co.uk/donate/
Trial the new PING G30 irons here first
Just to remind you that we are a fully accredited PING fitting centre and as such we already have the new PING G30 irons heads in stock for fittings, I had a chance to try the new irons last week and as usual PING have made a top notch club - I was very impressed with the forgiveness of the irons but the main thing I noticed was that they definitely hit the ball further than the old G25's.
Watch this video of Bubba Watson trying out the new G30 driver and you can see for yourself what all the buzz is about!
We will be one of the first shops in the country to stock the new G30 range and we will be holding a full fitting day on Tuesday 29th July 2-6pm, you can be one of the first people in the country to receive a FREE fitting for the new PING range, appointments must be booked in advance and it will fill up quickly so please contact me here to book a slot.
If you can't make this date don't worry as we are an authorised PING fitting centre we can book you in for a PING custom fitting at any time, in fact we already have the new G30 iron fitting heads so you can book now!

Our Lady Captain, Jill Bebbington, organised a very successful Charity Day last week in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, the ladies played a Texas Scramble with the winning team consisting of Jill, Sandra Peake and Rita Boon. The ladies then enjoyed a lunch and Cherry Winder from the Vale Royal MS Welfare Society was on hand to present the prizes. Jill was thrilled to announce that £275 was raised on the day for a very worthy cause.
