Kath’s Kup

The ladies had a good turnout last Thursday for Kath’s Kup and the weather behaved itself, the early leader was Elspeth Forbes with 33 points although she soon got overtaken by Collette Walling who came in with 34 points. Elspeth wasn’t too disappointed though as she had the massive consolation of scoring her first ever hole in one on the 7th hole. Using her trusty 4 hybrid Elspeth hit the perfect tee shot and watched in glee as her ball tracked towards the hole and disappeared into the cup, the 7th was also the nearest the pin hole so she secured that prize too! Thanks very much to Elspeth for providing the prosecco afterwards in the bar for us to celebrate with and welcome to the very exclusive hole in one club!

Di Somerville was also celebrating as she returned to the clubhouse with a fine score of 37 points which pushed Collette into second place and the last few groups couldn’t better this score so Di took the honours, here is Kath presenting the trophy to Di.

August medal review

The weather was also good on Saturday as we played the August Medal, it’s hard to believe that there is now only one more medal left in the summer season!

The sun was out but there was a steady breeze blowing to challenge our competitors, one player who tends to play well in tricky conditions is James Eaton and the 6 handicapper excelled on Saturday as he fired a steady nett 68. It was a round that could have been even better after a solid front nine when James went out in level par 35, the difficult 10th hole caused him some issues as did holes 12 and 13 and suddenly he slipped to 6 over par but James dug in and two great birdies on holes 16 and 17 saw him return a score that nobody else could better. James has also booked his place in the season ending Hartford Masters competition.

In second place was the ever consistent Ian Daines on nett 69 and Ben Barrow was third on nett 70 despite scoring a horrible 10 on the difficult 10th hole! The par 4 10th hole played to an average of 6.53 on Saturday and not one player in the field parred it, showing that it’s a fearsome hole that can often make or break a good round.

The next competition takes place on Bank Holiday Monday as we play the County Foursomes competition at 12:04pm.

The tournament itself threw up another first time Major winner in the form of 24 year old Justin Thomas, it was a close affair until the last few holes when Thomas showed his class playing the famous Green Mile last 3 holes better than anyone else including a brilliant birdie on 17, this meant that Thomas was allowed the luxury of making a bogey on the last hole and still winning by two shots.

Thomas’s good friends Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler were waiting to congratulate him and he will surely add more majors to his collection. He’s a small guy but he hits the ball a country mile and apparently Justin Thomas is the pound for pound longest hitter on Tour, check out a cool video below to learn how he creates so much power, we might not all be as flexible as Justin Thomas but may be you can try some of his power moves next time you play!
