Competition news

May Medal

Martin Major is making a bit of a habit of winning Medals, after he won the season opening April Medal he has now added the May Medal to his collection of silverware for his second win of the season already. Martin's latest round was his best one yet as he scorched around the course in level par 69 gross to score a nett 62, Martin's round was very steady with three birdies and just three bogeys and his handicap has now fallen to a career low 5.5, well dome Martin that lucky green shirt is still working!

Despite such a low score Martin only just won the Medal as young Javier Lang also returned a fine nett 62 but he just lost out on a card playoff, Javier's consolation is that he qualifies for the season ending Hartford Masters. Alan Tayler continued his good season with a third place finish on nett 65 which included three birdies in just 4 holes.

Well done to Paul Foster who won the Midweek Medal on Wednesday with a nett 64, Paul's new handicap is now 18.

The next competition is our second Major of the season - the Barnes Trophy on Saturday 27th May at 10:04am.

The Ladies Clare Cup

Christine Paxton capped off a good week by winning the ladies Clare Cup to get her name on the ladies honours boards for the first time, Chris had a good round in the Inaugural Trophy on Saturday and went even better on Thursday as she fired a fine nett 66 to take a well deserved victory.

It was hard luck for Sue Gunning who also scored a nett 66 but she missed out on the victory after a card play-off, the highlight of Sue's round was a nice birdie on the fourth hole. Di Sommerville ended up in third place with a solid nett 70.

This Sunday it's the ladies Barnes Trophy which starts at 1.00pm.

Captains news

Here is Captain Ian Wharton's first 'blog' of the new season.....

'I am very honoured to be your 2017 Club Captain and I am looking forward to playing with as many members in the competitions as I possibly can; it's particularly encouraging to see some new members entering the competitions.

'Thankyou' to all who participated in my 'Captain's Drive In' back on the 1st April which was captured on 'Facebook Live', so no additional pressure on the tee shot then..!

As some of you may be aware, I have been away with the family (and fellow members Keira Wharton, Alan Nevin & Pauline Nevin) for most of April on a pre-planned trip to the USA visiting my son, Rhys Nevin-Wharton, who is on a golf scholarship at the University of Tennessee, so thanks to Dave Shering (Vice Captain) for covering in my absence.

We also visited Mexico whilst we were over there and during one particular round, found this guy on the 13th fairway...I didn't bother asking for my ball back..!

The first 'mid-week' 9 hole league team match was played away on against Cheadle, as I was still away Chris Whalley led the team who put up a great effort, but unfortunately lost '1 Down' in a closely matched contest. Sign-up sheets for the next few matches are on the notice board.

A quick word on my chosen charity for 2017 which is 'Alzheimer's Society', the UK's leading dementia support and research charity (visit www.alzheimers.org.uk for further information). Please remember to contribute by putting your 'Captain's Charity Fine' (£1 for going in either bunker on the 7th hole whether in a competition or not), into one of the brown envelopes marked 'Captain's Charity Fine' and dropping it into the payment slot next to the competition computer in the conservatory. Alternatively, you can simply hand your 'fine' to me.

See you at the 19th hole...!'

Team News

It was a sunny morning for our ladies match against Woodside last Wednesday who put up a strong home performance as they won convincingly 4-0.

Here is Lady Captain Sandra Peake and partner Rita Milburn who played against the Woodside Lady Captain and her partner, it was a bit like Man Utd against Man City with their outfit colours!
