Hello again everyone and welcome to our latest newsletter - it's been another busy week here at the club and we wanted to say thank you to everyone that has so far taken the time to fill in our survey your feedback is much valued.
In the golfing world Rory McIlory showed his true quality to win the $10 million season-ending FedEx Cup, whilst this Friday sees the start of the much anticipated Ryder Cup - however this news has been somewhat overshadowed by the sad passing of 87 year-old Arnold Palmer. Arnold was a giant of the game and a real gentleman, with his charismatic way he made golf cool and exciting like never before and he made people who had never heard of the game want to try it and watch it on TV, Arnold Palmer will be sadly missed and the Ryder Cup this week will be played with him at the foremost of all the players and fans thoughts.
In this week's news:
- Adam and Matt hit the heights in Portugal
- Martin's long overdue Major victory
- Tom is unbeatable again in the Knockout Trophy
- Watch the Seniors on the big screen
- Night Golf is filling up fast
- Upcoming events
PGA Lombard Trophy review
There is only one place to start with this week's news and that is the stunning victory by our PGA professional Adam Powell and club member Matt Leach who paired up with each other to win the biggest Pro-Am competition in Europe. Out of over 100,000 golfers that originally entered Adam and Matt qualified for the final after victory at Dunham Forest - funnily enough Matt was a late sub after James Eaton had to pull out with illness! So they went on the final consisting of the best 14 Pro-Am pairs in Britain played over two rounds at Vila Sol in Portugal last week with a prize fund of over £40,000.
The pair turned up in good form but had a rather lacklustre first round of one under par 71, this left them in joint eight place and four shots off the lead. They saved the real fireworks for the second round and played the first nine holes in three under par to sit just one shot off the lead, the fun happened on the back nine as the pair went into overdrive to score seven birdies and fire a best of the week round of ten under par 62. Adam contributed five birdies on the back nine including a decisive one on the last hole after he holed a twenty foot putt and the highlight of Matt's round was a brilliant birdie on hole 17 for a nett eagle, then they had a nervous wait in the clubhouse to see if any other pair could match their 11 under par total - a bogey on the 17th hole for their nearest challengers meant that they held on to win by one shot.
This is by far the biggest victory of Adam's professional career and a great achievement from Adam and 18 handicap partner Matt, Adam is back here teaching this week and we're sure that he will be even more in demand now!
Have a read here of the write up on the PGA website about Adam and Matt's brilliant victory.
