Well played Bubba
I am sure that many of you were just like me and glued to the TV last week to watch another magnificent Masters tournament unfold. Bubba Watson emerged as a humble and deserving victor and was presented with his second coveted Green Jacket by last years winner Adam Scott. The Augusta Committee again presented a course in immaculate condition with lightning fast greens and many tricky pin positions, the set up seemed to offer the perfect balance between difficulty and fairness with just seven players finishing under par after the four rounds.
Even without Tiger Woods the tournament lacked none of it's usual luster and there was some great golf played by many. In the last round it turned into a two way battle between 20 year old Jordan Spieth, who displayed a great temperament and maturity in his first ever Masters and will surely win this event in the future, and the big hitting flair of Bubba Watson.
Bubba used his driver on many holes and hit both the longest and straightest drives of all the field. In the end it was this amazing distance off the tee coupled with a succession of quality high soft landing iron shots along with a reliable putting stroke and the knowledge and experience to minimise mistakes that took him to victory. The 366 yard drive Bubba hit down the 13th in the last round was quite astounding meaning that he only had a wedge in to a par five and on many holes he was up to 60 yards past Spieth (who isn't a short hitter) off the tee!
In the latest rankings Bubba Watson is now at a career high of number four in the world and I would bet he might need to make further room in his wardrobe in future years for more Green Jackets. I, for one, cannot wait until the US Open in June!

Sunningdale Foursomes comes to Hartford
There was a slightly different format to our usual competitions on Saturday as we played our first Sunningdale Foursomes competition. This involves both pairs driving off, picking the best tee shot and playing alternate shots from there.
Despite the unusual format the pairs soon adapted well and scoring was good with the winners being Club Captain Chris Bird & Martin Major on 40 points, they birdied the sixth hole both times round. James Eaton & Steve Hulse scored 39 points to finish second and third place went to Ian & Julie Daines with 38 points.
The next competition is a Stableford this coming Easter Monday with a 12pm start you can still enter on the club notice board.
Entry sheets are now also up for the Singles and Pairs knockouts, see the notice board for more details, the entry fee is £5 per player. If anyone is looking for a partner to enter the pairs with then please let me know by clicking here as I'm sure I can fix you up.
Although they weren't playing as a pair, Captain Chris Bird and Gareth Eaton were looking good sporting their matching outfits, it inspired me to launch a competition for best golf outfit of the season and so far Gareth you are the early leader!

Shoe trade in offer now on
Our shoe trade in offer has now started and will be running throughout April, you can trade in any old pair of golf shoes and get up to a £20 discount off a new pair of shoes. When we ran this offer last April we had over 40 pairs of old (some very old!) shoes traded in against new pairs. It's a great chance for you to upgrade your shoes, getting a new pair at a discounted price and helping get rid of an old pair that may be gathering dust in your garage!
Ian and James play well in Pro-Am tournament
Our PGA assistant Ian Ridgway partnered up with member James Eaton to play in a Pro-Am on the 1836 Golf Tour at nearby Sandiway Golf Club last Tuesday. They played really well and finished in second place overall shooting a betterball score of 6 under par 65. Ian played the front nine in three under par and on the back nine James chipped in on the tricky par 3 11th hole and added a few pars before Ian ensured they had a great finish with birdies on the last two holes. Ian shot a gross score of level par 71 to also come in the top 10 in the individual professional's scores, well played James and Ian!
The Seniors played their Spring Special on Tuesday which involved playing the first nine holes off the white tees and the second nine from the slightly easier yellow tees, however new member Andy Margeson clearly loved playing off the white tees as he scored a brilliant 24 points on the first nine holes! Andy added 20 more points on the back to score a total off 44 points to win the competition by 6 points. Those lessons from Adam Powell have clearly helped and his handicap has now dropped to 15. In second place was Pete Wildin with 38 points and third was Alan Phillips with 37. Frank Yarwood and Rhett Butler did well to score two's, next Tuesday's Seniors competition is a nine hole Stableford.
