Competition news

I & J Daines Summer Pairs review

The Summer Pairs Trophy reached the final stage on Sunday, between four players who have all won competitions this season and it was expected to be a tight contest. Vice-Captain Paul Underwood was partnered by his 14 year-old son Kieran as they met Club Champion (nett) winner Jonno Ness and Mike Angel who has had a very good season consistently challenging for honours.

It was a tight affair all the way - the first lead was taken by Jonno and Mike however it was soon levelled by a well-played 3rd hole by Paul. Their lead was restored following a great tee shot from Jonno on the 5th which secured a nett birdie. Kieran nearly holed out for eagle on the 6th having put his tee shot through the back of the green which levelled the match before the father and son pairing took the lead for the first time winning the 8th but again their opponents hit back on the very next hole.

The match reached the turn all square and after Kieran won the 11th with a par, a pair of nett birdies from Jonno and Mike in three holes swung the match in their favour with them one up with just three to play. It was at this point that Kieran showed his skills by hitting his tee shot on the 16th pin high and sinking an 8 foot birdie putt to level the match. The 17th is so often pivotal in a tight match and so it proved, Kieran found himself blocked out for his second shot and it was Paul's turn to step in with a birdie to take a slender lead going up the last. Mike made a good fight of it on the last but an unfortunate lie for his third shot made it tough to get the up and down he needed to win the hole and extend the match. The result of the epic contest was decided when Paul lagged a putt on the 18th green and the match was graciously conceded.

Good luck also to Kieran in his trial for The England under 16's Regional Squad at the end of the month!

Winter League Reminder

We're now taking entries for the Winter League, Kieran and Paul have decided to change partners for the winter as many pairs do but they will be back to defend their I & J Daines Summer Pairs Trophy next year. If you are interested in playing in the Winter League this year make sure you sign up on the notice board and put your initial entry fee (£5 per pair) in a competition envelope, in the box by the time the first round is played in the 10th October.

September Medal review

Maybe it had something to do with the funky trousers, or maybe it was the new golf bag that he purchased in the shop before his round, but whatever it was that prompted it Gareth Eaton certainly hit some fine form on Saturday as he stormed to victory in the September Medal with a nett 64.

In second place was Steve Dunning on nett 66, his round included back to back birdies on holes eleven and twelve but a costly double bogey on the last ended his chances of winning, Captain's Day winner Stuart Gray continued his good form with a nett 67 in third position. It's also worth mentioning James Eaton's round, although he only scored a nett 70 he had an amazing total of six birdies in his round which has nicely boosted his eclectic score!

Playing off seven Gareth played some really steady golf with a healthy total of fourteen pars and just three bogeys offset by one birdie, even though this was Gareth's first win of the season he has had a good number of top ten finishes and as a result of this consistent golf he has moved to the top of the summer Order of Merit with just one competition to go. After winning the winter Order of Merit Gareth now has a great chance of doing the double and winning the summer edition too, given the depth of competition amongst the members of Hartford this would be a great achievement!

The President's Day is the last competition that counts towards the summer Order of Merit trophy, and Gareth Eaton holds a slender three point advantage over Ian Daines and Jonno Ness with Dave Shering and Stuart Gray also still in with outside chances of finishing top.

A special mention also to Chris Bird who did something that I have never seen before in all my golfing years, he was caught red handed searching in the bushes for a lost golf ball - which isn't an unusual occurrence for Chris as we all know! What was very unusual was the location he had lost a golf ball - behind the practice putting green even before he had teed off, surely this wasn't a good omen for his round if he was losing balls even before starting!

Tour news

There was an unusual Monday finish on the US PGA Tour as the American's enjoyed a Bank Holiday, last week I wrote about the exciting times in the world of golf with the establishment of a big three of Jason Day, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth however maybe I was a bit premature to limit this top crop of young players to three and it should have included Rickie Fowler in a 'fab four' bracket instead.

Famously Fowler was dubbed the 'most over-rated' golfer by many of his peers at the beginning of the season but this year he has done his talking with actions rather than words and in 2015 he has now won twice on the US tour and also won the Scottish Open in Aberdeen, after his latest victory at last week's Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston he has risen into the top five of the FedEx Cup standings and number nine in the official golf world rankings. The latest tournament ended up being a battle between Fowler and Henrik Stenson with the Swede taking a slender one shot lead into the last three holes, however a costly visit to the water at hole sixteen saw Stenson make a double bogey and gift victory to 26 year old Fowler as he calmly parred the last few holes. With a new found consistency in his game and now the victories to back it up Rickie Fowler will no longer be overlooked when we talk of the world's leading players and that fab four should have some great battles in the years to come.

Two time major winner Jordan Spieth continued his dip in form with a missed cut but he has the consolation of returning to world number one in the rankings, with two events to go it's all to play for as the best players in the world battle it out for the mind blowing ten million dollar prize money that goes to the winner.
