US Open Review
The US Open at Chambers Bay certainly made for entertaining viewing, despite the late finish I'm sure that many of you were glued to the screen watching a dramatic conclusion. Jordan Spieth emerged as the last man standing as the course seemed to batter a lot of the world's best players into submission!
The USGA found a worthy winner in Spieth. He displayed a steely resolve and unflappable mind-set along with a hot putter which allowed him to navigate around what was clearly a very punishing golf course if you went off line or lost your patience. The statistics regarding Spieth's short career so far are simply remarkable, he is the youngest player to win two majors since 1922 and only the fourth player ever to win four tour events before the age of 22.
The course set up came in for some criticism but I thought it offered a great test, clearly many players struggled - most notably former world number one Tiger Woods, but good scoring was possible as shown by Adam Scott's last round 64 and Louis Oosthuizen's scintillating back nine score of 29. At the end of the day the greens may not have been perfect but they played the same for everybody and those players that embraced the challenge rather than moan were clearly the most successful.
Young Kieran Underwood will be miffed that Dustin Johnson three putted the last green to miss a play off as if he had won Kieran would have got his money back on the new TaylorMade R15 driver he purchased last week!
The US Open sweep winners were:
1st place (£75 voucher) Steve Hulse
2nd place (£40 voucher) Adam Powell
3rd place (£25 voucher) Steve Bond
Last place (£10 voucher) Abby Underwood
Not long now until the best major of them all - the Open Championship at the Home of Golf; St. Andrews, I bet you won't get very long odds on a Jordan Spieth victory!

Do you want to putt like Jordan?
If you've been watching any big professional golf tournaments recently you will have noticed how well world number two Jordan Spieth has been putting, a large part of his success on the greens is attributed to the Scotty Cameron putter he has used since he was fourteen years old but one thing he has changed is the grip. The grip that has helped to establish him as the number one putter on tour is the distinctive SuperStroke grip that is designed with a parallel technology that allows for even pressure in both hands, eliminating added tension in the wrist and forearms.
Many of the grips also come in larger sizes so if you have a tendency to get a bit 'wristy' or 'flicky' with your stroke the larger size allows you to have more of a solid pendulum action with the arms swinging freely.
The grips are also a light-weight material with improved feel and tackiness and they come in an array of colours and sizes, here are just some of the most popular styles with a price of £29.99 including fitting.
If you feel like your putting could be improved why not come in and try one of the new grips on your putter, we can put one on for you whilst you wait!

Sunningdale Pairs
We played a new competition on Saturday which was the Sunningdale Pairs, it was a foursomes competition played in teams of two.
The scoring was very good considering that most members hadn't played a great deal of foursomes golf before, the winning pair were Neil Dunning and Patrick Scanlan who seemed to gel very well together to score a 44 point total. Neil and Patrick really came to life on the back nine scoring a massive 24 points including back to back birdies on holes fifteen and sixteen. In second place was the pairing of Chris Bird and Martin Major who scored 42 points, they had a brilliant eagle on the twelfth hole but will rue a costly double bogey on the last. In third place was Captain Liam Tyrer and Gareth Eaton also on 42 points.
This Sunday is the Scratch Trophy sponsored by Birdie Consulting, our young England star Rhys Nevin-Wharton will be aiming to win this event for the fourth year in a row! Please remember though that you don't have to be a low handicapper to play in this competition as there is also a prize for best nett and Order of Merit points to play for.
