Greetings from Tim and Paul at Hartford Golf Club
Hartford Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

A warm welcome to our latest newsletter, there's been lots of sunshine this week as the weather has finally improved and it's been good to see quite a few new faces venturing out onto the golf course and driving range, this week we again bring you news of our best ever shop offer in which you could buy a brand new driver and effectively get it for FREE! The main features this week are:

  • How you can have a new driver on us
  • Liam keeps his cool to win June Medal
  • US Open sweepstake is back
  • US Open preview
  • Great Cleveland wedge deal
  • Loyalty card launch
  • Cleveland/Srixon fitting day news
  • Competition news
  • Ladies news
  • Seniors news
  • Upcoming events

How you can buy a new driver for free?

We make no apologies for making this feature the main part of our newsletter again and it has been good to see a lot of you already taking us up on the offer - we are giving you the opportunity to claim your money back if you purchase a new driver from our shop between now and Wednesday 17th June, here's how it will work:
  • If you buy a new PING driver and PING staff player Lee Westwood wins the US Open you get your money back
  • If you buy a new Nike driver and Nike staff player Rory McIlroy wins the US Open you get your money back
  • If you buy a new Titleist driver and Titleist staff player Adam Scott wins the US Open you get your money back
  • If you buy a new TaylorMade driver and TaylorMade staff player Dustin Johnson wins the US Open you get your money back
  • If you buy a new Callaway driver and Callaway staff player Phil Mickelson wins the US Open you get your money back

What's the catch? I can hear you saying! The only slight catch is that the money back is in the form of a full value credit note to be used in the shop, so if you pay £249 for a brand new Nike driver and Rory wins the US Open we will give you a shop voucher for the full value of £249 (if you traded in an old club the credit note will only be for the amount you paid for the new club). The credit note can be used against anything in the shop including membership and green fees as well as golf equipment.

This is an amazing offer that we have never run before, it is an unbeatable deal and we really are putting our money where our mouths are! This offer will NOT be advertised in store it's a special deal that will only be advertised in the newsletter or on our Facebook and Twitter pages so it's something that our loyal newsletter readers can take advantage of and you will need to mention that you've seen it when you make your purchase in store.

The promotion will run on any new drivers (including custom fitted equipment) bought from the above brands between today and Wednesday, 17 June so you have nearly two weeks to buy that driver you've always wanted and quite possibly get it for free, all the players that we have chosen are amongst the favourites so there's a good chance!

If you have any questions about this offer please contact me here

Alan takes advantage of our offer!

Here's Alan Phillips enjoying his custom fitting session for a new driver, Alan was one of many people to take us up on our special cash back offer and we fitted him for a new Callaway XR driver that he hit further and straighter than his old one.

So next week when the US Open starts Alan will be cheering on Callaway staff player Phil Mickelson because if he wins Alan will get his money back on the new driver he has just purchased!

Captain wins June Medal

The June Medal was played on Saturday and even though the course was bathed in sunshine there was a strong breeze blowing that made scoring difficult, the winner was our Captain Liam Tyrer who scored a brilliant nett 66 off his 17 handicap.

Liam's winning score was a little surprising to me as Liam came into the shop after nine holes looking very out of breath as his electric trolley had packed in on him and he'd been pushing it around most of the way!

Despite the trolley issues Liam played some superb golf including a birdie two on the difficult eleventh hole and was a deserving winner on a tricky day, his handicap has now dropped to 16.

In second place was 19 handicapper Phil Carr, Phil overcame scoring an eighth on the first hole to recover well and card a nett 67, in third place was the ever consistent Mike Angel, who recently won the May Bank Holiday Stableford, on nett 68. Click here to view the full results.

The Order of Merit is wide open this summer with nobody running away with it, the top three standings at the moment are:

1. Ian Daines 23 points
2. Gareth Eaton 21 points
3. Alan Tayler 20 points

The next competition is this Sunday - the Maddock Trophy, and the good news is that this competition is being sponsored by Srixon so every member that plays in the competition will receive a sleeve of Srixon balls of their choice for FREE!

The seniors played a sunny nine hole Stableford on Tuesday, the winner was Mike Eddison who claimed his first seniors competition win with a great score of 20 points, Mike's handicap has now fallen to 27. In second place was Frank Cleaver with 18 points, Frank had a birdie two on the seventh hole, and in third place was Bill Powell on 18, Bill also had a two on the second hole. Next Tuesday it's the annual seniors versus ladies match at 9.32am, it always proves to be a closely contested match!

As all of our members and regular visitors will know we are a much laid back golf club and we don't like to enforce lots of rules on our golfers, however one area where we will be tightening up is in players having their names down but not turning up for competitions. If a player doesn't turn up for the competition it can lead to disruption with other golfers being left without playing partners or having to move groups, if you cannot make a competition it's your obligation to let us know in the shop as soon as possible, from now on if a player enters a competition but doesn't turn up they will be given a warning by the Competition Secretary and if they don't turn up on a second occasion there will unfortunately be a competition ban for that player.

Please just remember to give us a call in the shop if you have your name down for a competition but can't make it.

US Open sweepstake

With the US Open coming up in just a few weeks we've brought back our popular US Open sweepstake, for just £1 a ticket you can pick a player out of the hat and depending on where they finish in the tournament you can win the following:

  • First place prize: £75 shop voucher
  • Second place: £40 voucher
  • Third place: £25 voucher
  • Last player after two rounds: £10 voucher

Tickets are available now in the shop, don't forget also that as the US Open is being shown on SKY TV you might not be able to watch it at home, don't worry though as we will be showing full coverage of all four days here in our Clubhouse!

US Open preview

This week I thought I would bring you a few interesting facts about the unusual history about the site for next week's US Open - the stunning Chambers Bay Golf Club in University Place, Washington. As with many links courses Chambers Bay (designed by Robert Trent-Jones) looks very natural like it has been around for hundreds of years but it actually only opened in 2007, it was built with the lofty ambition of hosting the US Open but the original goal was to host the tournament by the year 2030 however after members of Winged Foot voted against hosting the 2015 US Open as they felt it was too soon after it last hosted in 2006 the door was open for Chambers Bay to step in. The golf course really does look awesome, it is built on sand so it offers hard and fast fairways and quick greens but also there will be a fair bit of variety - the course length will vary from 7200-7700 yards for the tournament and holes one and eighteen will alternate between par four's and five's. It's is one of the few true links courses in North America and it should offer a stern test for the world's best golfers. If you want to play a round at Chambers Bay it will cost you $299 for the privilege, however with a $20 million construction cost you can understand why green fees are so expensive! Next week look out for our tips on the five players that we think you should bet on for the US Open, with the Masters in April we tipped three of the final top six players so you could make a bit of money if you listen to our expert advice!

Ann Broster won her second ladies competition of the season as she scored 20 points on Thursday to win the ladies nine hole Stableford, the highlight of Ann's round was a brilliant birdie two on the second hole. In second place was Ann's pairs partner Alison Worrall with 19 points, Alison and Ann are also going head to head in the ladies spring knockout trophy semi-final - it should be a tight match! In third place was Elspeth Forbes on 16 points.

The next ladies competition is a nine hole Stableford on Monday evening.

  • Ladies nine hole roll up - Thursday 9.32am
  • Maddock Trophy - Sunday 14th June 11am (Srixon sponsored receive Free balls)
  • Ladies evening nine hole Stableford - Monday 15th June 5.32pm
  • Seniors vs. Ladies Match - Tuesday 16th June 9.32am
  • Ladies nine hole roll up - Thursday 18th June 9.32am
  • Sunningdale Pairs - Saturday 20th June 12.04pm

Loyalty cards launched this week

We are constantly striving to come up with schemes that will allow you to obtain the most value for money you can from your golf, in addition to a range of flexible membership schemes we are now launching a loyalty card that should appeal to the many golfers that visit us regularly for rounds of golf but aren't club members.

The loyalty card is simple and offers you a great incentive, every sixth round of golf you play - we will give you for FREE . All you need to do is pick up a Loyalty Card from us in the shop and every time you play a round of golf you get the card stamped by us, when you have five stamps on the card the next time that you play the game will be FREE!

The Loyalty Card can be used by any adults paying the normal price green fees so it doesn't include seniors or juniors as we already offer these groups a discounted green fee rates.

Next time that you play a round of golf make sure that you pick up your Loyalty Card and you can start saving straight away!

Cleveland wedge deal

We are now running a 'Cleveland buy one wedge get one half price' offer, Cleveland were the number one selling wedge brand in the country in 2014 so they clearly know something about making decent wedges! We can also offer you a little bit of an extra service through a free wedge gapping or custom fit session so that you can make sure you get the right lofts to suit you, for example how many of you use a gap wedge or even know what one is?

Conveniently we have a Cleveland wedge fitting day coming up soon, with a fitting session we can show you how important it is to get the right distance gaps between your wedges and you can start shaving shots off your score.

With a normal selling price of £79.99 per wedge you can buy two Cleveland wedges for just £119.98 - a saving of £60 over the RRP of these clubs!

Coming up soon is our Srixon ball fitting and Cleveland wedge fitting day on Thursday, 2 July from 12pm-4pm, on this day you can book a slot for a FREE ball fitting or a wedge fitting session. As always it's recommended that you book in advance and there will be some special offers on the day with some good discounts.
