It was a great sporting weekend with England's brilliant victory in the test match cricket taking most of the headlines whilst it was rather surprising to see world number one Rory McIlroy miss the cut at the European Tour's flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in Surrey and probably even more of a surprise was the eventual winner, 23 year old Korean golfer Byeong-Hun An, who blitzed around the course in a record breaking score of 21 under par. Mcilroy headed to Wentworth with his game in 'best ever shape' but it looks like an exhausting schedule caught up with him and although he won the event last year he has now missed the cut in his other three appearances at Wentworth, it's obviously a course that isn't to every players liking especially after a lot of recent course design changes and Ian Poulter even chose to play in the Colonial event in America instead of the European tour's flagship event.
With no Rory at the weekend the highlights of the tournament included an amazing record breaking tenth European Tour hole in one for the ever-green Miguel Angel-Jimenez, a very rare albatross two for Tommy Fleetwood and 6 foot 7 inch golfer Chris Wood won a sporty little BMW i8 car for his hole in one on the fourteenth hole. The tournament lacked a close finish as Korean An dominated the last day with his 267 total winning score being a record, An has previously won the US Amateur as a 17 year old and he clearly has a great game showing a cool head on Sunday to cruise to victory in his debut season on the European Tour.
This week sees the Irish Open taking place at the stunning Royal County Down, Rory McIlroy is again in the field, because it takes place in his home country he regards the Irish Open as his 'fifth major' and after a few extra days off to practice last week he will not lack motivation to win the tournament. I think everyone was again surprised yesterday as he struggled to an opening round score of 80, it just shows what a fickle game golf can be and how fortunes on the course can ebb and flow so quickly. At least when we see the world’s number one struggle it makes you realise that it must be a frustrating game even for the likes of Rory!
Geoff wins his first board competition
The Benny Trophy was played on Sunday, it’s the only board competition we play with the format being Bogey, it certainly suited Geoff Dodd as he won with a 5 up total, in just his second full season as a member Geoff has won his first main board competition after winning a seniors board competition last year. 15 handicapper Geoff’s round went very serenely as he birdied the eight hole to be one up after nine but he really burst into life on the back nine playing it in just four over par to end up 5 better. In second place was Jonno Ness who also had a great back nine to finish 4 up including five pars in his last six holes, Jonno has now had three runners up spots this year. In third place was Julie Daines who also scored a total of 4 up, well done also to Captain Liam Tyrer who scored the only two on the seventh hole.
The next competition is coming up a week on Saturday – the June Medal, it’s amazing that we are now nearly half way through the golf season already!
Bank Holiday Stableford results
Mike Angel has been playing well recently so it wasn’t a great surprise to see him win the Bank Holiday Stableford on Monday, he scored 40 points including five straight pars to finish and he scored a fantastic 23 points on the back nine, Mike’s handicap has now fallen to 21. In second place was 6 handicapper James Eaton who has also been a runner up on three occasions this year, James played solid golf all the way round with three birdies and he scored points on every hole, in third place was Sandra Peake with 38 points.
Also worth a mention is our young Cheshire star Tom Duncalf (2 handicap) who fired an amazing six birdies in his round of 36 points, he played the six holes from twelve to seventeen in a very impressive four under par gross.

Unlucky to also score 42 but miss out on the card play-off was Alan Phillips, Alan had a birdie two on hole sixteen and he can't feel too hard done by as he won the recent seniors Spring Special competition, in third place was Rhett Butler on 41 points.
