Make sure you that get the right advice
We carried out a fitting last week for a golfer who needed help as he was really struggling with the new driver he had purchased. It was one of last year's top models and he had bought it for a bargain price off the internet but as soon as he started using it he struggled to get any height on his shots and he wasn't hitting it anywhere near as far or as consistently as his much older, previous club.
The problem was that he had bought this driver because it was cheap and he thought it was too good a deal to miss out on, however the only specifications they had left in the driver was a nine degree loft with a very heavy stiff shaft - he thought he would still get it was such a good deal and he could surely make it work but as soon as he hit a few shots with it in our fitting studio we realised it was completely wrong for his swing speed and it didn't really suit him in any way.
He actually needed a driver with more loft and a much lighter, softer shaft to help him launch the ball properly, the driver he had bought off the internet was in effect, useless to him. This expensive mistake shows that it's much better to seek a bit of advice before you make an impulse buy and for just £25 we will give you a full swing analysis on our launch monitor which will ensure that, when you do make a purchase, it will be the right one for your game. We also knock the £25 OFF if you buy the club from us so it doesn't cost you anything extra to get the right club, what have you got to lose!

Join now from as little as £200
I wanted to remind you again that we have introduced a points membership you can join for as little as £200 , it's a great option for those of you that would like to play more golf this year, try a golf membership and get plenty of good value golf in without having to spend a fortune. For the price of £200 you will receive a 200 points membership card to use against rounds of golf here at Hartford and at our other course Pryors Hayes, all your rounds of golf are at a reduced price and it works out that you can play 18 holes for as little as £8 , the breakdown of the points is below:
Monday-Thursday - 9 holes = 9 points, 18 holes = 12 points
Monday-Thursday (after 1pm) - as many holes as you can play = 8 points
Friday-Sunday - 9 holes = 10 points, 18 holes = 16 points
Friday-Sunday (after 1pm) - as many holes as you can play = 12 points
If you wish to establish or maintain an official handicap and play in club competitions you must also join the appropriate golfing union, the additional fees for this are £12.25 for men and £14.75 for women.
The beauty of the points card is that when the 200 points are used it can be topped up at 50 points a time for £50 as many times as you like over the year.
Don't forget that this is not the only great membership deal we have on at the moment - you can join now as a full member and get 15 months for the price of 12, with 7 day membership costing £640 this means that you can play as much golf as you like any day of the week for around £10 a week all the way until the end of March 2016.
There is also the option to take up dual membership with our sister club Pryors Hayes if you fancy playing a couple of different courses the fee is just £775 for the 2 courses!

In terms of new equipment in our fitting room, the new Callaway Big Bertha Alpha demo drivers have been causing quite a stir. Our two pro's Adrian Hill and Adam Powell have both hit the new driver and were very impressed, also in the latest Golf Digest Hot List for 2015 it appears at the top of the ranking with a Gold Award.
Golf Digest sum up quite well just why this driver works so well, "you can move weights in the heel and toe to correct slices and hooks, tweak the loft to one of eight settings and flip a weight to optimise your spin....that kind of freedom requires saving weight, Callaway neatly does this by using an amazing eight different materials...so it's not only more adjustable but lighter than last year's model".
Good aerodynamics and lightness equate to more club head speed for you than you may previously thought possible, but more speed basically means more distance. If you want to try the driver for yourself why not get booked in our Callaway fitting day, details of which are just below.

Members profile
This week we bring you a profile of former Captain and all round good guy (apart from being a Man City fan) Dave Johnson:
What is your current handicap and when did you start playing golf? - 'My present handicap is 10. I started playing golf late in life, about 15 years ago. I had my name down to join Anthropos but joined Hartford shortly after the course had opened to see if I could justify the cost, and I've been a member ever since and Captain in 2007. This club is about the people, we have a great bunch of members here and it contributes towards a great atmosphere.'
Have you had any holes in one? - 'I had my first and only hole in one on one of our Scottish trips. The first day at Carli links was the course, on the 14th hole. They gave me a certificate to remember the occasion and that night we watched my beloved City beat Man United. What a great day that was. Aguerooooo!'
Your favourite course you have played? - 'I've been lucky enough to have played many top courses mainly due to the Hartford Scottish tour. These have included Valderrama, Carnoustie, St. Andrews, Kingsbarns and San Roque. I would have to say that Valderrama edged it for me - stunning course and steeped in history.'
What course in the world would you like to play? - 'That's easy - Augusta National for obvious reasons, you never know one day we may be able to organise a club trip there!'
What has been your best round of golf? - 'My best round has to be 39 points at the Old Course at St. Andrews, I was off nine at the time and to play under my handicap at the home of golf will always be memorable.'
What's your favourite/least favourite hole at Hartford? - 'My favourite hole is the 9th as there are lots of different ways of playing it and it is a great test. My least favourite is the 17th off the whites, it doesn't set up well for a left hander and it's killed many a good round for me. This would be closely followed by the 2nd, a four there is good for me!'
Who would be in your dream fourball? - 'My dream fourball would include the mercurial Seve Ballesteros, Jack Nicklaus and Ian Poulter. However I would also want Belen Mozo, Natalie Gulbis, Lexi Thompson (from the LPGA tour) and Lizzie Bond as my 'bunker babes'. The golf might be poor but it would be a hell of a night in the bar!'
There is now just one round left in the Winter League before we reach the semi-finals stage, there was a cold breeze blowing on Saturday which made conditions difficult for everyone and the scores reflected this. Four teams tied on 21 points, after a card play off the winners were Patrick Scanlan and Steve Nicholson, in second place were Paul Underwood and Andie Fraser and in third place were Kieran Underwood and Dave Sherring.
With just one round left it will take a good score from one of the lower placed pairs to break into the top four which are as follows:
Gareth Eaton & Liam Tyrer 112 points
James Eaton & Julie Daines 112 points
Antony Green & Dave Johnson 110 points
Andie Fraser & Paul Underwood 109 points
Round 8 takes place next Sunday 8th February.
The seniors played their 18 hole monthly Stableford on Tuesday and as usual there was a good turn out, the best score came from in form Joe McLean who scored 42 points - his handicap drops from 26 to 24 as a result, well done Joe! In second place was Paul Frost on 40 points and in third was Captain Graham Bower with another consistent return of 40 points.
Good luck to our ladies playing the first round of the Mail on Sunday Classic this Sunday at Sandiway, the team consists of Julie Daines, Evelyn Vass, Sue Gunning, Sandra Peake and Sarah Dee.
