The new year means that lots of new kit is arriving in the shop, one of the most exciting arrivals this week has been the new Nike Lunar Control 3 golf shoes. Golf shoe design has improved considerably in recent times with modern shoes looking a lot more fashionable and boasting just as much technology as you would see in golf clubs, a good pair of golf shoes is just as important as having the right driver or set of irons. These latest shoes from Nike were made using feedback from world number one Rory McIlroy and they really have created the ultimate lightweight performance golf shoe that offers ultimate stablility and comfort while maintaining lightweight control.

McIlroy has been very excited about wearing the new shoes and posted this photo of him wearing them in Dubai, click here to take a look. With one of the most powerful golf swings on the planet, stability and control from the ground up are critical for him and all other golfers to maximise performance. Because of the rotating force in his swing, McIlroy asked the Nike designers to create a solution that provides better traction, prevents slipping and retains the control needed to generate power and speed - having tried the shoes on I think Nike have more than succeeded in this task.

The Nike Lunar Control 3 are extremely comfortable and also feature a wider base for increased stability and to allow the golf athlete to maintain contact with the ground for as long as possible through impact. A carbon fibre midfoot shank also delivers lower, lighter and more stable control and with a two year warranty Nike are obviously confident this is a very durable shoe. Call in now to try a pair on your feet and you never know you may experience some Rory power!

Members profile

This week we bring you a profile of Liam Tyrer who will be taking over as our next Captain in April

What is your current handicap and when did you start playing golf? - 'It's 17 at the moment and I played as a youngster but I've only been playing seriously since joining Hartford in 2007'

Have you had any holes in one? - 'I have been lucky enough to have had 2 holes in one. My first was at St Michael's in Widnes and my second was on the 2nd hole at Hartford during Antony Green's Captain's Day, but what made it even more amazing was that I scored a 10 on the 1st and 3rd holes!!'

What's you favourite/least favourite hole at Hartford? - 'My favourite hole at Hartford is the first off the white tees. It is a difficult hole but if you get it right, it can set you up for the rest of your round. My least favourite would have to be the 17th off the white tees - no matter how hard I try, I just can't seem to get past the bushes on the right!!'

Your favourite course you have played? - 'I have not played too many really top courses, but out of the few I have played, I would have to say that Nefyn and District Old Course is by far my favourite. It is one of the toughest courses I have ever played but it is also one of the most picturesque especially when you get out onto the peninsular.'

What course in the world would you like to play? - 'There are a lot of courses I would love to play, but at the top of my list would have to be The Alisa course at Turnberry. I love playing Links golf and in my opinion, Scotland has the best Links courses in the world.'

What has been your best round of golf? - 'For me, my best round of golf was when we played St. Andrews Old Course a few years ago. It wasn't necessarily my best scoring round ever, but for the feeling I got teeing up on the first and buzz I got from each hole especially the 17th, that round will live with me forever. And scoring 39 points with 2 blobs wasn't too bad either!!'

Who would be in your dream fourball? - 'My dream fourball would have to be with John Daly, Ernie Els and Miguel Angel Jimenez. Ernie Els is my favourite golfer and I would love to share a course with him, and I think Jimenez and Daly would have some outstanding stories and it would be a really good laugh.'

The sixth round of the Winter League was played on Sunday and it really is getting tight now, the winners on the day were the solid pairing of Gareth Eaton and Liam Tyrer who fired four birdies between them in nine holes to score 24 Stableford points. In second Andie Fraser and Paul Underwood continued their good form with their third consecutive 23 point total and third place went to Simon Stephenson and Ian Wharton with 22 points. There are now just two rounds left to play and it looks like the final top four qualifying spots won't be decided until the last round so all is still up to play for even for those pairs just outside the top four, the next round is Saturday 24th January.

The top currently looks like this:

  1. Julie Daines & James Eaton 112 points
  2. Gareth Eaton & Liam Tyrer 111 points
  3. Antony Green & Dave Johnson 110 points
  4. Andie Fraser & Paul Underwood 107 points

The next competition is this Saturday - the January Stableford. Please note that we have moved the January Midweek Stableford to next Wednesday 21st January - this is to avoid a clash with the Age UK golf morning.

The Seniors played a yellow ball competition on Tuesday, the winning team was captain Graham Bower, Geoff Dodd and Ken Powell with the runners up being Alan Nevin, Alan Calvert and John Hool.

In terms of competitions, the ladies have had a Christmas break but there is a nine hole Stableford next Thursday 16th January with a start time of 9am.

The ladies have been drawn away at nearby Sandiway Golf Club in the first round of the Mail on Sunday Classic competition, if you're a lady member interested in playing in this match please click here to let me know.

  • AGE UK golf morning – Wednesday 15th January 9am-11.32am
  • Ladies 9 hole Stableford – Thursday 16th January 9am
  • January Stableford – Saturday 17th January 11am
