Competition news

Winter League Round up

We played the third round of our Winter League on Saturday and with each round the scoring continues to improve! It's a lot easier to play good golf when the course is in pristine condition so thanks to Dave and Harlie for their continued hard work, the greens were again running true and fast for the time of year.

Pete Kinsey and Jay Moran had their second 27 point score of the campaign, but amazingly it wasn't even good enough to take first place - playing in the same group the 'experienced' pairing of Ken Powell and Pete Wildin scored an unbelievable 28 points meaning that the fourball scored an unpreceded 55 points between them!

Pete Wildin scored a fine two on the 5th hole and along with Ken they parred another 6 holes with just 2 bogeys on the card, Jay and Pete Kinsey had two 2s on the second and fifth holes and there only slight blemish was a 7 on the difficult 3rd hole.

Our oldest pairing finished on top and our youngest entrants were also in contention - Joel Cann and Ben Barrow continued their good start to the Winter League as they fired a stunning four birdies in their 25 point score in finishing in third place. Round 4 comes up this Sunday at 11am, and the forecast is good, so we can expect some more big scores.

Seniors section

Lots of seniors are playing well at the moment and it was tight at the top for their 9 hole Stableford last Tuesday, three players scored 20 points but the winner emerged as Bob Galley who had a great run of 5 pars in his last 6 holes to win the card play-off.

Geoff Dodd had a birdie on the fourth hole but had to settle for second place and in third was Bob Bowen who had two 2s but didn't score on the 3rd hole.

There was a bumper turnout of 39 players and is great to see the numbers holding up well as we enter the winter season.

Ladies news

Wendy D'Arcy is a regular visitor to the winners circle now and she finished on top last Thursday in the latest ladies 9 hole Stableford. Wendy scored 19 points including brilliant pars on the 7th and 9th holes which proved crucial. Wendy was the only player under par on a blustery day for golf.

In second place was another Adrian Hill pupil as the ever improving Bev Rickett scored 17 points and Jean Jones completed the top three with 15 points.

The next ladies competition is a Children in Need fundraiser this Thursday at 9:24am, the format is a 3 clubs and a putter challenge with lots of prizes on offer.

2019 rules presentation

We had over 250 representatives here last week from North-west Golf Clubs as England Golf gave a 2019 rules presentation to highlight some of the major rules changes. Don't forget our own rules night quiz hosted by 'Mr Steady' Ian Daines is coming up on Friday 23rd November at 7:30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend to learn some of the new rules (and also current ones) in a fun and sociable environment.

PING's new putter range is like no other....

PING have brought a great new range of putters out that are like no others, at first you probably wouldn't even notice, until you looked closely, but all the putters in the new Sigma 2 range are fully adjustable for length with a variance from as short as 32" up to as long as 36" - everyone sets up differently and with this range you can custom fit yourself for the right length to suit you.

The adjustability is simple with a small tool that fits in to the butt end of the club and the grip slides up and down the shaft to changes the length, when you are happy with the length you take the tool out of the grip end and the club is then set up just how you want it. Have a look at our video of the week to see how simple and clever it really is.

The Sigma 2 range includes some great head designs to suit your stroke and a popular new addition will be the Fetch, it was used to great effect by Lee Westwood to win at Sun City over the weekend and it's a unique design with a hole in the middle of the head - you can use it to pick the ball up with out of the hole and it works perfectly for this so it could help those with back problems.
