October Medal Review Before we get into the results, a few of our members were confused as to how a medal competition could be a stableford format, well it is true that medals were traditionally strokeplay events but in recent years the definition of a medal competition has become more blurred as the stableford format has become more popular. There is nothing in the Rules of Golf to say that a medal has to be strokeplay, the term ‘medal’ refers to the traditional prize given to the winner and many Golf Clubs have Medal competitions that are stableford, as ours will be over the winter season. It was great to see Andie Fraser’s name at the top of the leaderboard on Saturday, as it’s fair to say it’s been a while! Andie had a good end to the summer season and was showing signs of an upturn in form, on Saturday he shrugged off a slow start to have a golden run of 3 birdies in the space of just 6 holes and he scored an amazing 18 points from holes 8 through to 13 which formed the backbone of his winning score of 37 points. He now has a new handicap of 17 and we’re sure that will drop further over the winter.
Andie was the only player to beat their handicap on a day when the course was playing it’s full length, there were three players on 36 points but Liam Tyrer took runners up spot after a card play-off. Liam will rue the 8th and 10th holes where he didn’t score and a birdie on the 13th wasn’t quite enough for him to get to the top. Third place went to the ever steady Ian Daines also on 36 points, he was steadiness personified with his 12 bogeys off his 12 handicap!! This Saturday sees the first round of the Winter League taking place, there are 30 pairs entered so far and you need to make sure that you are entered and paid up with the £5 entry fee before the competition starts at 11am.

Ladies news The ladies played for their Autumn Trophy on Thursday and just to challenge our competitors even more it was played off the competition tees. Chris Paxton emerged on top with a very creditable 35 points but it was a close affair as Annie Rowland also had 35 points and interestingly both play off 28 handicaps. Chris clinched the trophy as a result of her better back nine of 16 points. Annie was flying after nine holes with 22 points but she lost momentum a bit on the back nine and had to settle for second place. Ena Rudman completed the top three with 34 points and there were no handicap reductions.

The Thursday before was the last Summer Stableford of the year and it was won convincingly by Rita Milburn with a fantastic 39 points, Rita scored 21-18 for her two nines in a very solid round of golf and her handicap has dropped to 28. Di Sommerville didn’t score on the first or the last hole but her other sixteen holes were pretty good as she scored 35 points in second place and Bobbie Mulcahy was third also on 35 points. Well done to Wendy D’Arcy who scored a two on the 7th hole. The next ladies competition is with the seniors on Thursday 18th October.

Seniors section For the first time that we can remember there was a dead heat in the first round of the Seniors Winter League last Tuesday, there was a tie on 21 points between Pete Kenyon and John Sykes and they had identical scores on the last 6,3 and 1 hole! Next best was new member Bob Galley with 18 points. This week the seniors are playing a nine hole foursomes competition – should be interesting….results will follow next week.

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail! Winter is on the way but there is no reason why you cannot still enjoy your golf even as the weather gets colder and wetter, there are just a few key points that you need to consider and make sure that you have some essentials ready for even the worst of conditions: - Check the cleats on your golf shoes and make sure that they will give you good grip on the slopes as they become slippier – we will re-spike them for half price!! Also check that you have a waterproof pair of shoes as there is nothing worse than having wet feet on the golf course, even if it’s not raining there can be a lot of dew on the fairways at this time of year – the FJ Boots are a popular option and like a pair of ski boots they also give you good ankle support for the slopes.
- Check your golf bag – have you got winter essentials such as a pack of handwarmers, a rain glove, yellow golf balls if the ground is frosty, a decent umbrella and a warm hat are all things that should be in your golf bag over the winter and you never know when the weather may turn and you might need them.
- Are your golf club grips still tacky and not too shiny? It’s like driving your car around with bald tyres it would soon start to slide around corners, a shiny worn grip will mean that you don’t have a sound grip of the club and it will slip causing you to grip overly tight creating unwanted tension in your swing – the winter is the ideal time to re-grip your clubs.
- Everyone who plays golf in this country should have a good waterproof suit - you cannot avoid the rain! We have some great ProQuip Aquastorm suits that are just £99 and have a three year guarantee, or you can splash out on the best of the best and invest in a Galvin Green Gore-Tex suit which are the best on the market and come with a lifetime guarantee so are worth every penny!
- Wrap up warm and you should have no reason not to enjoy your winter golf. Make sure that you have a good thermal base layer and a windproof jacket or sweater and these snoods are very popular nowadays to keep your neck warm.

Photo of the week It’s that time of year again when we have introduced preferred lies or winter rules on to the golf course, some of you may not be aware what this means. In simple terms if your ball is on the fairway (just the closely mown grass) you are allowed to mark the position of the golf ball with a tee-peg or something similar and pick it up to clean it and replace within six inches but no nearer the hole. Have a look at our photo to see the imaginary semi-circle you are allowed to replace your ball in. If you are in the rough then you are not allowed to move your ball in any way but if you’re just off the green on the fringe this does count as a close mown area. |
|
If you’re not sure how far you are allowed to re-position your ball on the fairway you can use a scorecard for guidance as shown in the photo, as the edge of a scorecard is around 5 inches you will always be safe using that as a guide.
Upcoming events - Winter League round 1 – Saturday 13th October 11am - Seniors 9 hole Stableford – Tuesday 16th October 9:16am - Ladies & Seniors 9 holes - Thursday 18th October 9:24am - 3 Club Challenge - Saturday 20th October 11am

Sometimes it's nice to reminisce about the good times. When it comes to golf, the days of persimmon woods, small clubheads and hitting balls which were hard as a rock are long gone - but it can help to take a trip down memory lane to remind us of just how much technology has developed, particularly in the case of drivers. |
Time tunnel
Take TaylorMade for example; you might have been lucky enough to own its iconic r7 Quad driver way back in 2004. The r7 was memorable for introducing the then-revolutionary concept of changeable weights in a driver, which was a massive shift from the conventional 'one weight fits all' approach. The r7 Quad is a classic club, and is certainly remembered with fondness. Fast-forward to the present day and TaylorMade has released its most technologically advanced driver to date in the form of the M3. The M3 really shows just how far we've come in terms of moveable weights, with a Y-Track feature that allows golfers to adjust their settings for optimal trajectory, maximum forgiveness, or less spin. So, whilst it is nice to think about your first ever driver, it's probably time to get up to speed with the latest models such as the M3. Who knows? Maybe in another 10 years time, you'll be looking back on the M3 with as much fondness as the r7 Quad! |
