August Medal The sun was shining and the greens were running as true as ever on Saturday afternoon so we expected some low scores in our monthly Medal and we weren’t disappointed! Dave Britton finished top of the pile with a nett 61, Dave’s low score wasn’t really a major surprise as he’s had a very consistent season but this was his maiden competition victory after a couple of runner ups in Midweek Medals. Dave has really found his feet in the last few weeks with four of his last six rounds being under par, on Saturday he played extremely steady golf and with a birdie on the 6th hole, Dave was only three over gross after 9 holes. The only slight blemish on his scorecard was a double bogey on the 16th hole, but Dave didn’t let this derail him and he dug in well with two pars to finish and return a fine nett 61. Dave has booked his Masters spot and also sees a handicap drop from 18 to 15. Jay Moran was incredibly unlucky to finish as runner up as he also scored a nett 61, any other week this would have been a winning score but it wasn’t quite to be. Playing off a 28 handicap, Jay went out in just 40 shots, but for a costly 11 on the difficult 12th hole he would have waltzed to victory! Nevertheless Jay’s improvement in the last few weeks has been remarkable and he has been putting in some hard work on his swing with the help of Coach Adrian Hill. A nett 63 was only good enough for third place on Saturday from another improving golfer – Andie Fraser, Andie played well at Forest Pines last weekend and he kept this form going on Saturday and his handicap drops from 20 to 18. There were also an incredible 9 twos scored on the day including two from Justin Hyam. In the Order of Merit Ian Daines is still on course to win it for a third time, he is on 60 points whilst nearest challenger is Steve Hulse on 49 points, in third place is Joel Cann on 47 points and there are now just three more qualifying competitions. This Saturday we play a new competition – the Captain’s Trophy with a start time of 11am.
