Course record

Steve Bond's course record of 66 had stood since August 2014 but with the number of good players we have here it was only a matter of time until it got broken and it was bettered on Saturday as +4 handicapper Rhys Nevin-Wharton played in our Captain's Day and shot a quite scintillating four under par 65.

Rhys has had a brilliant summer since returning to the country after his first year at Tennessee University, he came within a whisker of qualifying for the Open Championship as well as a good showing in the Tillman Trophy and winning the Wilmslow Crow but now surely the highlight will be setting a new course record at the club where he started his golfing journey!

A solid birdie on the first hole was followed up by three in a row on holes 4,5 and 6 and it was clear that Rhys was in the mood to go low, an uncharacteristic three putt on the 7th was soon put right by another birdie on 9 to get Rhys back to 4 under par. The back nine had less fireworks as there was just one more birdie and one more bogey for and three pars to finish saw Rhys finish on 65 to set the new best score.

Rhys now holds course records at Hartford, Sandiway and Fairhaven and we can't wait to see what the future holds for him - the sky really is the limit!

Captain's Day round up

We had a great turn out for Saturday's Captain's Day and luckily the weather was also on our side, Captain's Ian Wharton and Sandra Peake put a lot of effort into organising the day and it was a shame that Ian couldn't play because of an arm injury but fair play to him for still hitting not one but two shots off the first tee and after this he did a sterling job in making sure everyone was suitably refreshed on the golf course!

In the stableford competition Stuart Gray came out on top with 40 points to get his name on the honours board, 13 handicapper Stuart got off to a great start with 6 pars and just 1 bogey in his first 7 holes, he struggled a bit around the turn but then settled down again with 4 pars and a birdie in his last 7 holes.

It was a close affair at the top as Andy Goolding and Gary Cashmore also scored 40 points but they were squeezed into second and third place respectively after a card play-off.

After the golf Ian was a good sport in continuing the long tradition of allowing himself to be chucked into the ninth pond, luckily it's quite shallow at the moment so he didn't have to do too much swimming with his injured arm!

Ladies section

Ladies section

The ladies played a summer stableford last Thursday but unfortunately on this occasion the competition didn't live up to its name as our ladies had to battle through heavy shower after heavy shower.

Considering the atrocious conditions Kath Hough did very well to score 34 points to win her third ladies competition in the space of 2 months, Kath just saw off Sue Gunning (also scoring 34 points) who had to settle for another runners up spot after a card play-off.

It was so wet that poor Pam Till's driver slipped right out of her hands on the 6th hole and flew into the deep rough by the tee - so far it's not been found so she's had to treat herself to a brand new PING driver - what a great excuse!
