Competition news

Tim Barnes has thrown in a very early contender for the 2017 Round of the Year by scoring an incredible 48 points on Saturday to romp away to victory in the January Stableford. Tim's handicap had crept up to 10 but after this round he is back again firmly into single figures after his best ever round, he had a steady start but from the fourth hole a nice run of birdie-birdie-eagle got him to three under par gross. Tim only had two more bogeys in his round and another birdie on thirteen meant that he shot a gross 68 to give him a massive 48 point haul and a new handicap of 8!

Incidentally we have to mention that Tim has been using the new Titleist 917 driver that he was recently fitted for and he has been driving the ball 'better than ever', we also fitted local golfer Colin Fulton for the 917 driver on Monday and he picked up an extra 17 yards through us fitting him for more loft, a lighter shaft and a heavier fade biased weight in the head if you would like to pick up more distance like this please talk to us about a custom fitting.

Alan Nevin was in a rather distant second place with 42 points including two birdies and in-form Gary Cashmore took third place also on 42 points, there was also a total of 9 two's scored on a day of good scoring. This Sunday we play the next round of our Winter League starting at 11am.

New arrivals

We had another exciting arrival last week in the fitting studio as the new Callaway GBB Epic drivers and fairway woods arrived, there has been a lot of buzz around these drivers on social media and with a name like Epic they have a lot to live up to!

You will hear a lot about Callaway's Jailbreak technology which in very simple terms involves two metal rods inserted in the face of the club that connects the sole to the crown - the result of this design feature is more stability and flex in the face resulting in extra ball speed which means more distance!

Have a look at this video to see why the Epic is so good.

The first golfer we fitted for the new Epic driver - John Barrow - picked up an extra 5 mph in ball speed on his old driver which gave him an extra 10 yards and he now can't wait for his new driver to arrive at the end of the month!

To coincide with our Epic arrival we are one of the first venues in the country to host a Callaway 2017 Fitting Day on Wednesday 8th February from 2-6pm, Callaway's Tom Gradwell will be here to fit 8 lucky golfers for FREE on any of the clubs in their 2017 range. This day will be very popular and you must book a fitting slot in advance, contact us here to book a slot now.

Members news

Hartford's Alternative Club Awards

Last week we revealed that Andy Margeson was our best dressed golfer of 2016, this week we're going to announce the HACA for Bandit of the Year which is always a hotly contested category!

There is the usual rogues gallery such as Marc Williams, Stuart Gray, Mike Angel and Andy Goolding that are capable of playing well under their handicaps at any time.

Paul Foster is definitely a bandit - he has won a Golf Guide event and in his last 6 competitions at Hartford he has had two wins and two runners up spots meaning that he's probably pretty comfortable off his 20 handicap!

But their can only be one winner, he hardly plays in any singles competitions which is always the give away of a serious bandit so the handicap stays reasonably high, he works at a Golf Club so has plenty of chance for 'sneaky practice' and he is virtually banned from one other local Golf Club for winning their Invitation Day on numerous occasions! Not only this he won a trip to Portugal with our pro Adam Powell in the PGA Lombard Trophy after a bandit round in the qualifier of nett 58 and then preceded to win the final after an 11 under par second round! Mr Matthew Leach you must be a true bandit to use a pink driver and you're definitely our HACA Bandit of 2016!

Senior section

John Webster returned to winning ways to take first place in the latest Seniors Winter League, John scored 20 points in cold conditions that made scoring difficult. In second place was Derek Mercer on 19 points clearly showing that his newly fitted PING clubs are doing the business for him and in third place was John Sykes on 17 points.
