Welcome to our latest newsletter packed full of news and useful information! Hopefully you enjoyed the Bank Holiday weekend and made the most of the sunny weather, the golf course is in fantastic condition, the season is in full swing and it really feels like summer has arrived - the PGA Championship was played at Wentworth and it was great to see an English winner, as Chris Wood hung on for his biggest victory to date and secured his European Tour card for the next 5 years.

It's not long now until the second major of the season as the US Open takes place at Oakmont, on 16th June, it was good to see local lads Lee Slattery and Matthew Baldwin securing their US Open places this week at final qualifying at Walton Heath and the 'big three' (Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy) have all won on their last outing...let the battle for the famous trophy commence. Look out soon for our usual US Open sweepstake in the shop.

In this week's news:
- Young Ben shows the oldies how to do it
- Gareth & Bobby make a perfect Sunningdale pair
- Sandra peaks in the ladies Stableford
- New Fitting Days for your diaries
- Paul Frost is far from cold in the Stableford
- Our CES is still in full swing

Competition news

The Bank Holiday Was All Ben's

It was 12 year old Ben Barrow that blew away the field in the Bank Holiday Stableford on Monday. We've had some great junior golfers come through the ranks in the last few years and it looks like Ben could be the latest in the production line - his 41 points winning total means that his handicap has been reduced down to 23, which is great going considering he's only been playing in competitions for less than a year.

Scoring wasn't particularly low on Monday which may have been due to a few tricky pin positions and Sue Gunning was second with 37 points, third place went to Jonno Ness showing glimpses of a return to form on 35 points.

June Medal

This Saturday we play the June Medal, starting at 12pm and the forecast looks good! We've also moved the June Midweek Medal back a week, to Wednesday 22nd June, to avoid a clash with a Society.

Sunningdale Pairs

Saturday was the day for our Sunningdale Pairs competition and there were some formidable pairs teeing it up. In case you aren't sure of the format, both players tee off, then they pick the best shot to play and hit alternate shots from there, one player hits the second shot on the odd number holes and the other on the even holes.

The format certainly suited Gareth Leigh and Bobby Williams as they scorched round the course with a fantastic 44 points, they had birdies on holes eight and fifteen and they even had a blob on their card on the ninth hole. Julie Daines and Neil Dunning combined well to score 41 points in second, but they will be disappointed that they didn't get even more points as they didn't score on the last two holes!

The pair of Steve Nicholson and Liam Tyrer took third place on 39 points.

K.O.

There were also plenty of knockout matches played over the weekend, there's a big match coming up this week as Captain Paul Underwood takes on son Kieran Underwood - wonder who will gain bragging rights there?!

Here's member Tony Lloyd doing his bit by posting his £1 donation to the Captain's charity after hitting his ball into the ninth pond, remember you can donate at any time by posting your money into the box in the conservatory - all proceeds go to the local Russett School.

Ladies news

Ladies Stableford

Plenty going on with the ladies again last week, they played an 18 hole Stableford on Thursday and Sandra Peake took first place with 40 points, Sandra has had a number of good rounds recently so this victory was no surprise and her handicap has now fallen to 20.

Margaret Cherry also had a good day with, not one, but two birdies, and on the fourth hole both times around, she came second with 38 points, Lady Captain Audrey Kettle took third spot on 35 points.

Charity Challenge Match

Lady Captain Audrey was also in action with our pro Adam Powell on Friday as they took part in a charity challenge match against the pair of Kath Hough and Jill Bebbington, it was Jill and Kath that came out on top winning by a two hole margin.

The Complete Equipment Solution

The Complete Equipment Solution (CES) is going from strength to strength and we've had many more happy golfers in the fitting studio in the last week, here are some more recent success stories:

  • John Bickerstaff purchased a new TaylorMade M2 driver after he hit it 25 yards further than his old Cobra driver
  • Julie Dunne went for some new Callaway XR irons and increased her distance by 10 yards but also lessened shot dispersion, so improved her accuracy
  • Frank Shelton decided on a new Ping G driver after we lofted him up and went for a lighter shaft, he gained 17 extra yards

Improvements like the ones above are typical when you visit us for a custom fitting session, but with the CES as well as a FREE fitting we can also offer you a FREE follow up 30 minute lesson if you do make a purchase, so that we can give your swing a quick check up to make sure that you use your new equipment to it's full potential.

The CES is the reason why you should see us for any of your equipment needs, you won't see an offer like this in a high street store or online, we want to go that extra mile to help you play your best golf!

Have a look at this video from Titleist about the CES.

Seniors section

The seniors played a sunny 18 hole Stableford on Tuesday, there was a good turnout of 29 players and the scoring was good - the winner was Paul Frost with an impressive total of 46 points, he had two birdies on the front nine including a five pointer on the ninth hole and he had 25 points after nine! Paul's new handicap is 23.

In second place was John Sykes on 45 points, he had a birdie on the fifteenth and in third place was Pete Wildin on 43 points, he had a birdie on the fourth hole.

On Monday the Seniors are visiting our sister club Pryors Hayes and then on Tuesday they are playing the next round in their nine hole Summer League starting at 9:16am.
