Just as the weather has finally improved this week our Winter League has come to an end for another year, the final was played on Sunday in glorious sunshine which was in stark contrast to the wet and cold weather many of the qualifying rounds were played in!
It was always going to be a close game between Steve Holehouse and Neil Dunning against the experienced pair of Antony Green and Dave Johnson, Dave was a man in form after his March Bogey victory the day before and both pairs had convincing semi-final wins. The match proved to be nip and tuck all the way with Steve and Neil establishing a one hole lead after nine, it remained tight on the back nine but the seventeenth hole proved to be pivotal as Steve and Neil won that hole to close out the match two and one.
So it's a big well done to our new Winter League winners Steve and Neil!
Winter season review
The March Bogey was played on Saturday and it brought the winter season to an end, this meant that the Winter Order of Merit was also decided, the two players battling for the title were 10 handicapper Dave Johnson and 16 handicapper Paul Underwood, with Paul holding a slender lead.
It was left-hander Dave that took first place in the Bogey competition with a score of 5 up but more importantly this meant that he finished on top of the Winter Order of Merit, Paul scored 2 up to finish in ninth place and he had to settle for runners up spot in the Order of Merit. In second place on Saturday was Ian Daines also on 5 up and third place went to big hitting Jack Brownrigg who had five birdies in his score of 4 up.
Congratulations to Dave on his first Winter Order of Merit victory as well as reaching the Winter League final.

Hole in one news
There was further excitement on Saturday on the eleventh hole as our very own Tim Barnes scored his first ever hole in one, as it's a semi-blind tee shot Tim and his partners had no idea the ball had gone in until they got up to the green and checked the hole!
Tim's perfect shot was struck with an 8 iron and it's the first hole in one we've had in a competition for a good few years, and even more amazingly Tim came within inches of a second hole in one in the same round when his wedge shot on the fourteenth hole spun to within inches of the flag for a tap in birdie!
Equipment news
We now have stock of the fantastic new Titleist Vokey SM6 wedges in the shop and a bag full of demo wedges in our Performance Studio, this franchise of wedges designed by Bob Vokey are now in their sixth model and they have always been a hit, the Vokeys remain the bestselling wedges in the country for a reason - they really work!
As a Vokey Pro custom fitting centre we have an amazing 28 demo wedges for you to try and we can give you the best wedge fitting possible, Nigel Forest was one of our first readers to call in for a wedge fitting the other day and he was very impressed with the new wedges. We fitted him from the green backwards and then made sure he had the right lofts to give him an even gap of distances with his three wedges, we then made sure he got the right grind that suited his technique and the right finish that suited his eye. The result will be that Nigel will have much more confidence in 'the scoring zone' 100 yards out from the green now he has the right tools for the job!

Ladies news The ladies played a nine competition on Thursday morning, 19 handicapper Alison Worrall took the victory with a nett 33 including a fine birdie on the seventh hole, Sandra Peake also had a birdie in her score of 33 but just lost out for first place on a card playoff. Third place went to Ena Rudman on 35, well done also to Gemma Davies who had an excellent birdie after chipping in on the first hole - but just remember to sign your scorecard next time Gemma!!
Alison Worrall and Ann Broster played in the Daily Mail Foursomes at home on Saturday against a strong mother and daughter pair from Warrington Golf Club who had a combined handicap of 29, unfortunately the big hitting away pair proved a little too strong and they won the match 4 and 2.
